Has anyone ever purchased coins from Jack H. Beymer? A couple years ago I bought a book from them, and every now & then I get a small catalog in the mail. They have a couple items that I'm interested in, so I'm curious about the grading and their accuracy.
I've met Jack on a few occasions, and stopped over at his shop for a while last February. He's a sweet old gentleman. Also, he's a devoted follower of the late Meher Baba. His grading is great for circ coins if not conservative.
I wish the guy had a website. I would have like to see what he has to offer. Some of the reviews online says he specializes in large cents. That's usually a good indicator that the dealer also has a few colonials / pre-federals...
They've got tons of them. Here's the phone # if you would like them to send you some info. 800-635-6040.. some of the prices are eye-popping though...
Thanks Abe! Appreciate the contact info. I'm also planning on asking if they send out periodic mailers, like some of the other non-local dealers I do business with.
Beymer is very knowledgeable about early (pre-1858) copper cents and half cents. He usually has a good variety of coins and, to my eye, they are accurately graded. However, (at least for early coppers), his pricing is very rigid and he doesn't seem to want to negotiate, at least at the shows I've seen him at.
I've always thought that his prices were high even though his coins are accurately graded. Because of his prices I rarely buy from him.
If the coins are conservatively graded, then a higher price is to be expected if you try to compare them to liberally graded price guides. I'm with Jack on this point. I'd rather see the prices inflate than the grade.
Jack has top quality copper, that's for sure, though he can be a little tough on prices, even for us dealers. But you won't get a more knowledgeable and honest dealer.
I would have to agree with Charmy. I have talked to Jack a couple of times at Baltimore and tried to get him to come down a bit on some coins that I liked. Nice coins and no problem to talk to (and his wife is even nicer). I don't mind paying a premium (stretching) for a coin I really like, but his prices are beyond my stretching point. I will probably try again next time I go to Baltimore (and I'll bet he still has the two coins I was looking at).
Jack Beymer is easily one of the best and most sincere dealers in the business. His prices are high, but I have sold coins to him very successfully as well. He will "wheel and deal" to some extent, but don't expect him to drop back below retail (or wholesale for heaven's sake). He pays legitimately for coins, and deserves to make a profit. Personally, I would trust his grading more than that of a TPG.
The Old Mint (Granite Lady) in San Francisco is having a coin show and Mr. Beymer will be there. Looking forward to meeting him and checking out his inventory. I have never bought coins from him.
The SF Mint show is next Friday and Saturday (April 23-24), I'll be there too, so be sure to stop by and say hi!
I try to save his table until last at shows. Otherwise my budget would get blown on my first purchase. I have yet to Purchase from him but as my list of wants narrows he is one of the few dealers that have what I am looking for.
Jack is a great dealer in Santa Rosa CA, he wont screw you on quality or grades, but be prepared to pay the big bucks. As a flipper, I cannot buy from him due to prices, but he has also helped me on a few occasions to confirm varietys and such. His wife is also very nice and always friendly. I always make sure to stop by and say hi at Long Beach, his table is pretty close to Charmys.
