What in the environment could possibly have put a line around Lincoln's silhouette so perfectly?

A human being…they are part of the environment…someone scribed a line creating that damage…and it wasn’t done perfectly…they gave up when they got to the nose…imo…Spark

 

That is definitely not done perfectly
Just look at the mess around the nose.
Some bored kid etched that

I have a 1937 with similar lines around the profile. More precise and complete.

The 1937 that I posted above appears to be die deterioration rather than damage.

 

I was referring to the OP’s coin. Yours dies look worn but more from wear to me.

I actually used to do that stuff when I was just a youngster.

you always wonder ... did I do that to that coin ??
nowadays I would just use that scribe, a hammer and punch a hole through it.
