Hey everyone, so on Friday I will be setting up at my third show. Now these certainly aren't coin shows, but antique shows. I am the only guy in many kilometers who *sells coins at shows or in any form at all. So shows are usually fairly positive for me. This, I'm expecting, will be the biggest show yet, and my name and what I sell is actually on the advertisements around town. I have purchased two collections last month so inventory won't be a problem. And I have been saving up do I won't be forced to day "no" to any potential new purchases. So wish me luck, and hopefully this one goes as well, if not better than all the rest. I think I might be putting a buzz in peoples ears about maybe starting up a coin club. The city has 55,000 people and no coin club. Over the years I've been trying to find all the collectors and talk and they have been slowly coming out of the woodworks. So I'll play it by ear and see if there's any interest. Any advice on that would be appreciated. I've read all the threads on CT o can find about starting one up so hopefully I get some new answers. I think @Coleguy was asking a while back about starting one up. Maybe he'll pop in. -Shawn
Good luck at the show Shawn. Do you have Craigs list in Canada? If so you could post a question looking for collectors in your area. Just a thought.
Best of luck on the club, Shawn. My efforts to organize one in my area proved futile, and our population is more than three times yours, though I know that has nothing to do with it as I've been in towns with fewer than 2000 people that had one. I finally just joined one in Vegas which is just an hour away. It's a lot of work but I think it would be well worth it for you. Guy~
Good luck at The Show of Shows ! I don't know much about organizing a coin club. I think the ANA has some ideas and assistance. Also... how many folks are in the sorrounding area to augment that 55,000 ?
Thanks, and in the surrounding area we have probably another 6 or 7 thousand. There's a million small towns scattered around here. I'll check out the ANA website, thanks for the advice. And Mark, I think people around here use Kijiji instead of craigslist. But you're right, that's another good idea. Thanks guys, keep 'em rolling in.
I here your pain brother!! i really dont collect coins more of a currency guy I do have a local coin club went to a couple of meetings, But there just wasent Enough of an interest on what i collect, So again iam a sip with out a port
Good luck and keep it going. Here is some suggestions in case your interested. 1. Check out the numerous coin magazines for possible free samples or a bulk rate discount. Placed on your table at the show might increse the interest in coins. Either for sale of free pending on how much it costs you. 2. Check for any coin stores in other area or towns nearby and see if they want to place an add piece of paper on your table for advertisement purposes. Might want to charge them a small fee or just do it for possible additional future merchandise. 3. Check with companies that produce coin related products for resale at the coin shows. Don't know how they do it but at most coin shows here, dealers are able to sell such things as the Red Book for $10, no tax and most stores sell for $14.95 plus tax. 4. If you can find a great deal on bulk Wheat Cents from the US, you might want to have some as givaways, free drawings, raffles, etc. Not to make a fortune but to inspire interest in coins. 5. A bowl of box of so called cheap or bargain coins is always nice for younger collectors to look through. Those are the big collectors of tomorrow you know.
Hey everyone, thanks for all the suggestions for the show. So it went good, but not great. Another guy signed up last minute for the show so there was more than just myself selling coins. And that's also all he was selling. I still did good and easily covered the booth price and my food for the weekend. But the part I am really excited about is the amount of collectors that showed up and were excited about the coin club idea. I have a list of about 20 guys who were willing to share their phone numbers for a calling list for the club. On the first day I was talking to an older gentleman about the club and he mentioned that a couple ago there were two collectors (A He and a She) that had tried to start a club. So the next day he brought in a 5 year old article from the paper with their names and phone numbers front the front page. So I gave them a call and they both came out that day to talk coins and try and brainstorm a good game plan for a coinclub. Seeing as how they tried the first time and it flopped. So we are all eager to get one going and hopefully we manage to find enough guys that are willing to give it a go. Anymore suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Well, good luck with your coin club! Aside from that, it sounds like you had fun. That was the biggest objective.
Congrats on getting some names for your club. I hope it all works out for you and your "future members"!
