Ok, just received this 1913 toned Buffalo Nickel. Please guess grade, and feel free to make comments regarding your observations about the coin. Toning looks just like the pictures. It is certified.
There’s something funky going on with this one. Some of the lettering and other details seem “mushy”. At first glance by these pictures, I question the authenticity.
MS-63. An apparently genuine and absolutely gorgeous Coin if I ever saw one! Love the toning and the details.
I debated between MS and AU; it appears there is some wear and it looks to be an older holder, so I'm saying an attractive AU 58.
Nice looking Buffalo! I've always loved the T1, they are just so much more interesting to look at. The toning is nice and doesn't steal the attention. The luster looks to be very muted. I think it would be a 65 if the luster was much better, but I see it as a 63 due to the muted luster.
The T1 is the better-looking in my book, too, though it is the more common, I think. I have to say AU58. If that's not wear I'm seeing, at least MS64.
Full horn and split tail. What looks like wear color change on the high points is from an album. If it was just that I would say 64. The streaks across the cheek and temple is what has me holding it back. AU58
Eddie, you are great on die state analysis. Regarding the circulated vs uncirculated nature of the coin, look at the die state on the letters. Looks to me like this coin was late in the mintage process of 30,993,520.
I’ll guess 65. Looks like an old NGC fatty to me. Could have also toned in the holder. The strike on that coin is hammered. Great eye appeal and no distracting marks to me. Luster does seem a bit muted at least in these photos but I bet it’s there under that toning. I bet it’s a great looking coin in hand. 65

I went 64. It’s an au 58 or a solid strong ms. It’s got really worn dies. And an intriguing surface more like a matte proof than a typical ms business strike. Personally I like the coin a lot as it’s not standard and boring
Yes I think that's right. That part is definitely not wear but the way the die looked. Die fatigue, I agree.
Ok, so many great posts on this coin. So many good ideas! I bought the coin for the color— really love the toned Buffalos, as it isn’t a coin that has many attractively toned specimens. What might appear as slight wear looks like what a few mentioned as die state. It seems to have a decent strike, with a badly worn die pair, which is almost contradictory. At any rate, yes, it is a fatty holder, and I do believe that NGC got it right. It has that soft, satiny patina, as opposed to high luster, but comes off rather attractive in hand. I agree with NGC’s grade— it might have been 63 or a low end 64 in a more modern holder.
