Hi there, We have a 1793, Isaac Newton, D&H #1159 Farthing in excellent, excellent condition. However, we cannot find the #1159 anywhere to get an idea of what this thing may be worth. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
Jason, Please post any additional information about this coin. I'm sure that both Physicsfan3.14 and I would be quite interested in learning more. I was unaware that there was a Newton Farthing. I don't think that this was from British mint (but I could be wrong), my guess is that it was from a private mint. and just to intrigue Physicsfan, last Wednesday, I was given the opportunity to examine:bow: a first edition of Maxwell's 1873 A Treatise on Electricity & Magnetism (just to show that there are esoteric interests beyond coins)
Here's a recent dealer offering for Midd 1059 "NEWTON 1159 1793 Bust Newton/Cypher. Fine, $15. AU or better, $49"
The only thing I can tell you is that this is a 1/4 penny farthing and is listed in the Dalton and Hamers token book, along with #1035 and #1161, which I have found on the I-net. Our #1159 coin is in much better condition (though you can't tell by the pic's) than what is shown in the book. Still, have not been able to find any info at all on this coin. Thanks for your help!
You are correct - it is a farthing Conder token catalogued by Dalton and Hamer as Middlesex Newton #1159. The engraver was likely Thomas Wyon of Birmingham and was issued for general circulation. It is considered a common token. My #1159 is in VF condition and cost me $12.50 on eBay about 5 years ago.
