I'm sure that we all have these: sets and/or series that we started collecting but, due to a variety of factors, never managed to finish. In my case, two that come to mind are the Norwegian pre-WWI silver 2 Kroner set and the large size Swiss 5 francs from 1850-1928. In both cases, I had purchased empty coin albums that were just begging to be filled; unfortunately, the astronomical price tags for many of the pieces soon put those dreams to rest. How about the rest of you? Any sets on the back burner?
I have two Mercury dimes need the 16 D as well my indian yead cents I need the 77....but my issue is trying to find a specimen that matches my sets that are the same grade or close...I rather a hold then put a G 3 coin in a set of vf and better quality coins. So in the two sets less 1 coin to complete I filled those holes with another coin ,medal, token on the same grade level, and ties to the series. I only need to please myself....so im very content with my set as they exist .
I need this one, well, not this specific one because it is counterfeit. I thought I had my IHC set completed and then I got the bad news. 1909 S IHC are expensive in VF condition so it may be a while. Regards.
I actually once had a goal of finishing every set possible of everything, so I'd just spend hours scouring ebay to find my missing dates for all these different series, and then finally it occurred to me that this didn't make sense. It was completeness for completeness' sake and I was looking at spending big money for key dates of coins that I didn't even like that much. Once I realized that I stopped doing this and sold off a lot of the sets I had been trying to complete, just keeping one or two examples of each. I didn't want to get rid of the sets I actually finished (Ireland 1928-2000, Greece 1900-2000, New Zealand and Australia predecimal, for example) but I'm not working on completing any more.
I have several sets I’m working on and therefore I can’t say I never completed them. I add to them constantly. I have 2 complete Mercury Dime sets and just recently put together every coin in a third folder of Mercury Dimes except for the 1916-D. I’m looking for a low priced one to plug that hole that doesn’t cost a thousand dollars. Lol
Many years ago I was trying to assemble an 1857 proof set and an 1885 mint set (without the trade dollar). I never completed the sets and I had to sell the coins. I was missing the copper coins in the proof set and I never found a nickel three cent for the mint set. I regret having to sell them but at the time I had no choice.
let's see I hit you with the 2 big ones... Morgan date set... complete, but will never be "finished" and the full morgan set which will never be complete simply due to cost.. same applies for half cents and large cents... just some dates an average joe like me will never be able to afford but that won't stop me from getting the rest and trying for the big boys lol
I have been collecting a Red Book variety set of the early half dimes from 1792 to 1805 for almost 40 years. I will never complete it because of the 1802 half dime.
I started a Buffalo nickel set about 15 years ago and never got around to finishing it. I did buy a nice 13S Variety 2 a while back, so I may go back to the set sometime.
I’m try to collect one coin from every issuing authority after the peace of westphalia given the number of German counties then issued maybe one year of Thaler I don’t think I will ever finish
I started to collect the US presidential dollars but stopped to concentrate on the Native American and innovation dollars. My real labour of love started in 1968 when the new UK decimal coins started to appear, I made a vow to collect an example of every UK circulation decimal coins. And 54 years later irs still going strong.
Definitely hear you on the Morgans; the 1895 proof, 1893-S, and 1889-CC alone make it a prohibitively expensive proposition, even in low grades.
I have several partial sets that will probably never get completed. They are an ongoing project that may take another 20 years. My primary focus is on completing a morgan date/mint set. Missing a 94 to have a date set. Missing the 89CC, 92S, 93S/O and the 94P/S/O for the complete date/mint set. Cost is the biggest factor in completing this set. So far been able to get the set in BU or above grade but will definitely have to lower the grade a lot for the 89CC and 92/93 S.
I've been working on the MS date set for years... at this point in needs a Nice MS 92 and 2-3 detail placeholders replaced (i have 2 92s p and s just not slabbed for the set lol) Is one of those "on going" sets that will probably never be done upgradeing even if all dates accounted for Date set here... https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/competitive-sets/328075/
The cents and half cents of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I think I got most of the common date cents but just moved on to other stuff.
That describes most of my Canadian coin sets. I had purchased a few used Whitman albums years ago, so I have most of the later date silver dimes, quarters and halves; however, most of my Victorian and Edwardian slots remain unfilled
