Hi CT. I found this Lincoln and noticed that it has at least 4 errors. Misaligned Die (MAD) Die Crack Grease Filled Die (Struck Thru) Plating Bubbles Am I right? Any comments are appreciated Thanks in advance Walter
What I'm seeing...an eroded die, a plating crack (not die crack) exposing the zinc. Not so sure that is struck through but looks like a weak strike in the area you show.
The only thing considered an error is MAD. Decent looking MAD,. You have a ridge ring that is breached and starting to corrode, and the usual plating blisters. Some striking weakness on the reverse. Note that the area opposite the weakness is Lincoln's shoulder. It takes a lot of metal flow to fill, so you'll typically see weakness in that area. It is not a filled die Too bad about the corrosion.
Well, @tommyc03 and @Oldhoopster, I was betting on Die Crack but I already imagined it would be corrosion. So, I guess this coin is doomed, because nothing can stop that corrosion installed on obverse and on the reverse as well.
In your tropical climate you may save it somewhat in a propper holder , Walter google Wizard coin supplies...its a company in Va. US sells coin supplies. Look for a product called verdicare that solution will help restore and reduce corrosion. A member @BadThad is the person to talk to as he developed the Verdicare Im sure with his background he be your go to person to ask. https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/products/verdi-care.html
Cool!! So there's still hope for the poor coin. And I already wanted to bury her alive!! I'm going to look for something similar to Verdicare here in Brazil, but if I can't find it I'll try to buy it from Amazon. Maybe I can, but I don't know if it goes through our customs. Thanks Paddy.
I'm pretty sure Verdi care won't do anything for zinc corrosion. It was designed to remove the hard copper encrustations found on older and Ancient copper coins
Actually more to remove verdigris (the soft fluffy stuff) and to protect the surface. It would be interesting to see if it would help against zinc rot.
I use it on nickels as well all brass and copper..works well ...on the specimens that ive tried it on.
You would be better just to go straight to Wizard coin supply. https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/products/verdi-care.html
What everyone else said ... but the only thing adding value to that coin is the Misaligned Die. A nice one at that.
Once zinc oxidizes it's gone, literally dust - end of story. However, VC will neutralize it and keep the coin from forming more. That said, the OP said he's from Brazil. The cost and shipping wouldn't be worth it for this one coin IMO. The only value in this coin is that it's a very strong MAD. Nonetheless, it's also badly corroded and ugly. This is one you just rinse with acetone, put it in a 2x2 and call it a day.
