Hello I’ve got just a rather simple question about a rather good looking 1966 silver half dollar I’ve just found.. In the my years spent cherry picking and hunting coins I’ve never actually understood what it takes to constitute or have a new error type recognize. I’m sure This is some what of a dumb question too some but as much as I’ve figured you have to send it in to someone to have it verified I’m sure but to who and should I even do it.. Here’s some pics of my half dollar that I just found last night and was unable to find any variety the likes of my coin.. Is more valuable to find errors that aren’t listed lol you guys know what I’m asking heck YALL get the same question I’m sure all the time… Thanks for any help as always and God Bless..
Hi and welcome to CT. If you are referring to the peripheral lettering, it appears to be the effects of machine doubling, flat and shelflike. In other words, worthless doubling. Also, if it were a doubled die it would be classed as a variety not an error. You can check your coin against these https://doubleddie.com/1141429.html the site also has some good info on how dies are made.
And if were a true unlisted Doubled Die it would fall under the Variety category. So your title would instead be.. 1/2 dollar unlisted variety God bless you also.
Cool thank you heck didn’t realize there was such a thing that made such a difference lol heck to me double is a double an I don’t really understand why there is a difference lol not being rude anything but is it not true that a machine produces the coin either way.. so technically if there is a doubling on the coin it was done by a Machine unless someone cut it out by hand.. I mean who can argue that point lmao its just my opinion but I think maybe sometimes we get a lil too carried away with classifications.. lmao just saying to someone that been hunting coins for a few years now I’ve never heard of two kinds of doubles but I’m glad it’s been brought to my attention so now I I’m back at square one again and all my error coins I really have no idea what the values are because every time I try and value an error I get told it’s not an error when in my eyes that’s clearly an error with doubling omgosh I tell ya this hobby gets more and more frustrating the more you get into it.. every time I find an interesting error someone tells me it’s nothing and coins I think are worth nothing are the ones that have value… It’s such a let down to find what should be considered an error because it clearly is an error and then be told it’s not an error. Well, there are actually several types of doubling. In addition to doubled die and machine doubling, there can be die deterioration doubling, split plate doubling on plated cents, hub doubling and there is also double struck. Study up on the minting process and sites like doubleddie.com, error-ref.com and varietyvista.com.
