Hello CT. I found this Lincoln Cent and wondered if It could be an example of Grease Filled Die. What do you think? Post yours if you have it. Comments are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Walter
Now I understand "struck thru". It can be grease or something else, like cloth? Here's one I found recently. 1999 Penny.
What happens is oil or grease that is rubbed/wiped every once in a while on the dies during the striking of coins will become compacted and hard so it won't allow the blank to be properly struck. The dies have an incused image so the gunk gets into them. It usually happens towards the end of the dies life after several thousand strikes. Struck through grease is a die state - worn die/die deterioration
I've been lurking, but haven't been active. I needed to take a break, and it's probably been almost a year now. I'll be posting a bit more, but not as much as I used to. There are many coins that I have sold over the years, but few that I regret selling. I should have kept this one. It doesn't fit into any of my sets or typical collecting directions, but it is such a cool coin. Oh well, at least I have pictures.
