You’re correct in that it’s not ED. Your coin was treated to a bath in something with acid and that’s why it looks like it does. The photos of your coin dhow that the way it looks it could not have happened at the mint.
She's just being stubborn. Why do you think she won't get it attributed if she thinks it's such hot stuff? That's an acid-washed coin, it has all the attributes, move on.
People on here get prickly when you ask a question and then respond that you know better. It is a little ambiguous when you talk about the" "wording sliding across the whole coin" and "stamped on the rim" even though coins are "struck" not stamped. Where do you see these things happening? I'll go back and take a closer look. BTW, welcome to CT (although you have been here a few years)
Not to mention, although I obviously am mentioning, the title of this thread is, 'What happened with this coin'. The OP wanted an answer, got answers, and elected to say she already knew the answer. My question to the OP is, if you already knew the answer, in your mind, why did you feel it was necessary to present your question to the members here?
"They confirmed it on Coin Talk . . . . " is all they need to post it on fleaBay as a great newly discovered error. It must be worth thousands . . . . Z
If that's the case then how bout I send the coin to you and have u look at it. I'm telling u this could not have possibly been done by anything outside the mint. I know what acid wash looks like and it's not that either.. look here buddy I am hot stuff and if u seen me in person you'd think so too but that has absolutely nothing to do with this flipping coin.
I would send it in for certification, priority, expedited, to PCGS with attribution service and conservation. That will quiet the naysayers . . . . Z
If anyone ever asks "why would someone do this" well ... it's fun ==> Zincoln Alka-Seltzer and my 1.558g Zincoln | Coin Talk and ==> Mint errors, DD being released to the wild | Coin Talk as a couple examples it's very easy to "copper" wash a coin. Weird thing is if you have coins partially covering each other and don't disturb the fluid it will only partially cover the coin. So they can look really weird partial discolorations of only the surface facing up when the mix fall down. Stir the fluid for more consistent discolorations. Discolorations totally dependent upon the amount of time in fluids. Of course, there's gassing too. of course, acid washing is easy. And it's easy to forget about it as the acid eats away at it for days. If one goes to YouTube and searches "cleaning coins" you can see people clean coins with Coke, acid, various soaps, vinegar, etc. a cool one to see if you search for "MONEY LAUNDERING AT THE WESTIN ST. FRANCIS" from 2016 to see how to clean coins with buckshot.
Got a question I got a doubled headed quarter with different dates on it. It has a seam on one side next to the rim on the face of the coin. I know when someone makes one they hollow one side out the put a thin piece back in the quarter so there's a head on both side which to me would be a lighter quarter but mine is in weight tolerance it weighs 5.51 grams anybody know?
Magician's quarter. anything inside of it ? what do the two halves weigh on their own ? pictures ? also, you may want to start a thread by itself. and Clad Quarters weighed 5.67 grams. So yours would fit into loss of material from being carved out. here's one that weighted MORE than two halves ==> magician's Washington quarter | Coin Talk it all depends upon the person making it and their skill to maintain weigh, if it doesn't have a cavity inside of it.
For a coin to be an error it has to occur during the minting or die making process. PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW THIS OCCURS DURING THE MINTING PROCESS? The simple answer is...it can't. That's what members are telling you. Many have decades of collecting experience and are very knowledgeable of the minting process There are countless ways for a coin to be damaged after it leaves the mint. Just because you can't explain the cause of the damage doesn't make it an error Will be waiting for your explanation of how this could occur during the minting process. Here is a video from the mint if you need some help https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=104&v=mqPvKxJXC_Y&feature=emb_title
