first off, i know i know pictures. the girlfriend has the camera, till tomorrow!

her mother has been cleaning out there attic and giving me her ex's old coins. she gave me the $20 double eagle and i plan on keeping it. that was last week, fast forward to today.....

she finds two of the $10 liberty eagles. both are cased and in amazing condition. not cleaned, no scratches, just incredible. i wan't to keep one of them and sell the other. i am in need of a bit of money for school right now, and i would rather not sell one, but education is more important then free coins(for me atleast).

i know it will be hard to tell without pictures, but until then i was wondering what i could expect to get for it? and if i should try selling it online or just take it to the coin shop?

there is no ware, whatsoever, it is just about perfect. it was in a lot better shape then the ms65 one i seen at the coin shop today.(btw the coin shop was called "the coin exchange" its in downtown pittsburgh, best coin place i have ever been to. very very friendly, and will help you find info on coins)

it has the "S" mint mark, i think they all do though?

I will just comment this, double eagles are the 20 dollar coins, the 10 dollar coins are called eagles, the 5 dollar coins are half eagles, the 2.50 coins are quarter eagles.

sorry, you are right. i was just so excited, its not every month(well not for me) you get 3 coins like this for free. not to mention a 1909-s-vdb! plus numerous others.

i appreciated your comment though, because if someone who dose not know see's this, they will find out..

is their a way to edit the title?

Gee I really do not know much about numismatic gold except for things I have read here, like there were lots of counterfiets made, that one way you can tell is by getting a magnifying glass and looking for pitting and signs of tooling, especially around the edges, Lost dutchman seems to have a good eye for gold, you might want to shoot him a pm, but he would probably want good pics to say for sure

if any more are needed, let me know. i took one of the edge. the pictures make it look dull, trust me it is shinny and very detailed! it weighs a decent amount as well.

i thought the pictures were good!

i need to get the ball rolling i got some bills do like, yesterday! i really need to know what would be a reasonable offer at a coin shop? so i don't get low balled.

or any other places i could get more money for it?

also are they all going to offer the same amount or is it better to shop around? i got 4 that are all downtown. i also got one that is literary 2 streets over. i'd hate to get an offer from the one right near me, then take the bus or get a ride downtown and they all offer the same price. pretty much what i am wondering is do they offer strictly by book or by other things?

sorry for being inpatient, but i really need to get the school paid so i can get my diploma, because its sitting there waiting for me. and i got a job as a police officer for the city of Pittsburgh, waiting for me and my diploma. i need to start my career! i pay tomorrow and turn the degree into the police office and i start monday. if not i have to wait like 2 months, when they will except me as a new officer.

OK, I don't know gold very well but you seem to be getting anxious so I'll throw my two cents in. I see what appear to be raised spots that make me very suspicious that the coin may be counterfeit. Again, I don't know gold well so take it for what it is worth. What I am sure of is that if it is genuine, it is not better than MS 65!

i ended up getting $475 for the coin.i probably should have waited till monday when my trusty coin shop was open, but after getting a lot of $250 and $300 offers. some lady offered to me $415. i got her up to $475, i probably got ripped but o well. i needed to have my payment in today!

Well i am going to just make you sick now. I am pretty new to this but i can do research like no ones business.

IF (big if) it was a 1899 S $10 gold piece then at MS61 price is 970 bucks.
at MS 65 it was worth 14K. that is if it would have received an MS 65 rating.

yes you got ripped off big time.

at another coin shop i visited they had an ms65 1899 s, for $800. mine was not graded. it was in good shape. someone reputable on her said it was in au shape. but the coin shop i didn't sell to, told me ms62. its very hard to go by what people have "for sale" online, they are justing waiting for that sucker to bite!

i needed the money for school, i have another one, thats in better condition. plus i have an 1899 $20 double eagle. i just got rid of this because i needed money and had 2.

as far as the price goes, i am not to upset.

    1. the coin was free, along with its brother and bigger brother
    2. it was unfortunately a Saturday and my coin place i like to deal with was closed. so limited places to visit.
    3. unless all the coin shops not to mention pawn shops and gold refinery places, were all in contact with each other, to low ball me. prices were consistent
    4. for the situation the price was about right. you can't look at what coins sell for retail. the people buying the coin have to make some money off it as well. if they would give retail, they would be out of business. the coin can sit in the shop for a long long time before they see a return on there investment. who knows gold could drop as well!!! if i opened my own shop then yea, i could probably squeeze $700 out of her.

what i was told from a great member on here was the coin was worth $600-$650 BUT you got to take out %10-%20 for the dealer. so if it was in $600 shape, there offer would have been $500.

so $475 plus a set of 1847 rogers brother sterling silverware! the owners thought it was just stainless so they had the set for $50, i knew it was sterling. i took it to a refinery and they offered me $250. i am waiting till monday to take it to my coin lady. she sells sterling silverware. i bet she offers me around $5-600! the refinery i went to always low balls, plus they don't care its an antic. they through in some old Italian money(probably not worth much, guy said he didn't get a chance to look at it. he asked his kid if it was valuable and you could tell the kid didn't look, so who knows. didn't look them up yet).

in the end i think i may make out good $475+$250at least= $725. probably be adding another $350ish to that as well. getting that silver helped a ton!

    thanks for the help everyone!
