Good morning! Had someone show me this coin yesterday. Since I'm more of a die variety guy than a mint error guy, I offered to take it home and image it for them, and said I would also post it here to get some more information. The coin is concave on the obverse, as if something struck the coin and damaged it. You can see the missing copper plating on the reverse side opposite whatever is going on where Abe's chin should be. FWIW, I have nothing to gain either way - mint error or PMD - just trying to learn a bit more while also helping this other person out. Thanks!
I see damage and can't see how that could have happened at the mint. There was a run of Kennedy Halves that the reverse was concave, and the obverse convex. But this was from severe die deterioration.
Looks like PMD to me. The obverse took a hit and the reverse immediately opposite shows the scuffing, abraided plating, and a little flattening from the hit. Just my observations and opinion
So far responses are echoing my gut feeling about this coin - I do appreciate those who have commented. Thank you!
I have to go with PMD on this one. I’ve never seen of an error that occurred at the mint that looks like this one.
Correct the 2001P& D Kennedy half dollars only sold in $50 bags And $10 rolls, years after their minted date... the convex half was spoon shaped a die crack ran though out the 50 stars on the reverses seal.I know as I discovered that variety. You couldn't stack them...well some you could the convexed ones no they fall over. A so called friend took my find to Ken Potter who did the atribution on this variety as well gave the discovery to a NYC con artist....who had a long history of scaming people.... he scamed a friend in Va out of a large amount of cash. The op coin look as if its a strike through.my best guess wood or cloth .
I could go with a stuck through. But not cloth. Something heavier like a piece of metal/equipment/tool part, etc. Heavy enough to do damage to the reverse side from the force applied to the obverse side.
Huh, it does look alot like a memorial. I still can't figure out how something retained was that big to affect the reverse. Hey, @stldanceartist is the reverse copper separated from the Core?
