Hey all. Hope everyone is well.

    So get this...

I work at a bank and as such I occasionally get some nice little finds...silver Ikes and halves, wheaties, etc. My best day was when a customer brought in a couple rolls of silver halves. I always tell them what they have before I take it, and I've saved some people from giving up Morgans and Peace dollars, as well as other stuff for face value. Sometimes they just say something like "oh thanks but thats ok...I don't want it" or whatever.

Anyway, over the 7 years I've been there I've accumulated like 4 rolls of halves 90 and 40%, a handfull of silver dimes, 4 walkers, a few franklins, a few nice foreign coins like Philippines silver, a ton of wheaties and even a silver 3 cent piece. But I never thought I'd see anything like what I got yesterday.

It was actually at another bank. One of my former coworkers knew I collected odd stuff like that and has always kept an eye open for me at her new bank. Over the past two years I've gotten a few silver pieces from her including 4 barber quarters. I always pay her something around halfway between face and spot for her troubles. She's a great kid.

So she calls me and to my disbelief she says some lady brought in 8 rolls of old quarters and 4 rolls of halves from the 60's.

So she gets them and brings them to me. Sure enough they are all rolled up in old old wrappers. I tell her if they are all silver we're talking a lot of money.

So I usually give her like 5 or 6x face which she's happy with although she knows that she could get like 10x at the store.,,I guess its a friend price :) She says she has to leave and asks for like $300. I instead give her $620 so she is clearing $500 over face. We agree to adjust if there is non-silver mixed in. She's really happy.

    I take them home...

I start unwrapping and this is what I get... make sure you're sitting down :)

4 full rolls of 90% halves...all 1964 Kennedy's except for one 1962 Franklin. About half are AU or better, including a handfull of BU's and 4 or 5 with a beautiful pink/yellow tone.

6 full rolls of silver Washingtons...1935 through 1964. The majority are from the 40's. Only a few 1964's. One appears to be a 1943 DDO! They range from F to XF with maybe 5 Vg's and 5 AU's mixed in.

The 7th roll has about 25 more of the same...and about 15 regular clad Washingtons. :(

Then I get to the last roll......:) :) :)

    20 more silver Washingtons,
3 standing libertys (2 no date, a really nice 27,)
    12 Barbers including get this... a semi key 1914S in F+ !

    and it gets better...

5 Seated Libertys including an 1868 and an 1860s!

    I couldn't believe it!

I get three coins with mintages of 250,000 or less. The 1914s is around that, the 1860s seated is around 60,000, and the 1868 is less than 30,000!!!

So for $620 I got over $1200 in silver and 3 semi-keys worth over $100 apiece.

I sell half of the spot coins to my buddy at the branch for half of what I paid cause we always split what we get at the same price (two sets of eyes are better than one lol) I gave him most of the barbers and all of the SLQ's but I'm keeping the semi-keys.

So after its all said and done for $310 I got over $600 in silver and the three great coins. A possible 43DDO, And about 4 bucks in clad quarters hehe! :)

Needless to say, I'm one happy camper!

    Talk about a great day!

nice find...about a year ago my wifes uncle gave me two one gallon paint cans filled with quarters halfs etc. he owned a hardware store and always threw the silver and larger coins in the two paint cans. He ask me to have a look at them...so long story short I found about 10 rolls of silver halfs, 48 rolls of 40% half's that I sold on e bay for $38.50 @ Roll. the 10 rolls of silver I got $160.00 each plus the change that I rolled and returned to the bank and the 52 Ike's dollars I kept they were AU's. I got to kep a few coins for my self.and handed Uncle M a chesk for $ 3600.00 for old two paint cans he had sitting down the basement taking up space! Oh Uncle also gave me a $200 gift cert. for dinner . Nice huh?

Congratulations on the great finds, seems like the teller that spotted them made out well, you and your friend also did well. I like that you notify customers that they could get more from their money selling them to a coin store, that shows that you are not greedy and have integrity.

You can tell someone that what they have is worth money and they still may not want to hassle with it, sometimes that is because they are well fixed and it is not worth it to them to make a few hundred more dollars, and take the risk of going someplace that they might be scared to be robbed.

I am not jealous, I am glad for you, the old saying is; you today, me tommorow.

Thanks guys. I agree I think all three of us are really happy. I will probably give the teller something nice :) And yes, I do always tell the customers what they have if its a situation where they come in with a bunch of them, or ask "what is this". If they give me $150.33 to deposit and there happens to be a silver dime in there I probably won't.

I'll post some pics tomorrow or Monday. At the G/F's right now and the coins are at home.

The 1914s is nice, especially the reverse. I'd say G on the obverse and VF on the reverse so I figure F overall. Numismedia and redbook were around $225 if I remember correctly.

The Seated Liberty's are definately very very worn... G at best. The 1860s is around $300 and the 1868 around 100. Not that I plan on selling any of them (and I know I wouldn't get those prices).

I'm just shocked at the mintages of those 3....and that I got all three in only 8 rolls. That 1868 is 29,000 mintage...to think that I have one of something that only one of every 250,000 people on earth have on average is pretty cool :)

Wow that is some great luck and some good friends. I'd watch out for your buddy at the bank and take extra care of her next time she sends something your way. Congrats! :)

    Great story! My story sucks:
A father of a child on my son's soccer team found $250 face value of seated liberty quarters in a house he renovated. I gave him a copy of a bluebook page for the series. This was almost two years ago...and he hasn't looked through them YET! I'll ask again in 6 months.

Not much you can do for them. There's always "little old ladies" that slip through the cracks somehow and turn in a batch of stuff like this to buy groceries and gas for the week.

Then there's always some lucky sucker posting their find story. ;) Only they're usually not THIS good! You made out like a bandit.

They had to be some family member's collection. You want to feel bad for people like this but honestly, if their communication is THAT poor or they were that unwilling to learn or know what their significant other actually had...... and the collector didn't bother to document anything, let them sell for face all day. I don't care. You can't help these people.

You are absolutely right, Chip. I'm almost always the guy on the other side and this was my turn! :)

Also, thanks for sharing the other great stories all!

It is true. A lot of times people just don't want to bother with things they don't know about or aren't interested in. I understand why.... it can be intimidating and nowadays when everything is made to be "convenient" we seem to find ourselves with less time to do things than before.

I love my coins...I have spent a lot more on them than I could sell them for I'm sure, but thats not the point. They mean much more to me than that, and I just thought it was really cool that these great coins fell into my lap.

    Good night!
