Well, I watched this one on Heritage for about 2 months before the auction, thinking about it, dreaming about it, studying it. I had Mark Feld look at it for me. I hardly bought any coins the month before saving up for it - and now it is mine. And I'll bet most of you have never seen one!

The coin is absolutely fantastic - well mirrored, dark, gorgeous piece of copper. There is a subtle play of blues and pinks on top of a fantastic strike. This coin is now one of the highlights of my collection.

The NGC census shows exactly 0 PL's graded - yes, zero. This one has not made it to the census, so I'm guessing it is the only prooflike Braided Hair half cent graded. NGC clocked it in at 65PL - which I think is perfect for the coin. Mark says that prooflike half cents are very rare.

This one, with a few other recent purchases, will be heading to California soon for the rock-star treatment by Bob Campbell.

You got that right! That is a fantastic coin :thumb:, if it wasn't for the rim I think it could definitely pass for a proof.

Nice coin! Not meaning to throw cold water on it, but is that a planchet flaw at 11:30 obverse (6:30 on the reverse)? I looks more obvious in the Heritage pix.

I'm not entirely sure what you are seeing, but there is a bit of strike weakness in the dentils at those positions, if that is what you are referring to?

Yeah, that is what I am referring to. It just seem too odd that as well as that coin is struck, there is one section where it is messed up and it is the same spot on both sides of the coin. The only cause I could come up with is a planchet flaw.

So when I look at the auction history for this date on heritage, per your link,, I see that every one of the previous auctions listed all went for the 'exact' same amount... what does this tend to say ????
Very few bidders for this date,, so only one guy out there bidding minimum price and winning all the half cents for this date ?? So low to no demand for this date ?? .. or does it mean that no one bid and heritage ate the coin at the minimum ask ??
... I just find it wierd that every one of the previous auctions for this date sold for the exact same amount... and my impression is that it implies very low demand.

I recently picked up a 42/1 merc that had similar auction history,,,, like someone was trying to put a buy on every 42/1 merc that hit heritage at a certain amount and was apparently winning them all,,, then stopped, and the bottom fell out of the historical price, and I won one for around 100 bucks less than any of the previous ones sold on heritage,,,, and imo, it's the nicest of all those listed in the history.. nice toning, which, along with an interest in the coin, was the reason i picked it up... http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1138&Lot_No=7950#Photo

Anyway,,, Can anyone tell us what it means when we view an auction on heritage, and all the previous auctions show a sell for price that is exactly the same ??

sorry, I know it's a bit of an aside, but just found it very interesting and want to validate my impression that it signifies low or decreasing demand and price support for a date....

    Great coin!!
BTW what is that blue on the inside of the rim on the obv from 10 to 11o'clock?
And why would this not be in the pop report if it's been in the auctions for a couple of years... shouldn't they be updated at least once a year?

Bahabully I'd say that both of those are min bids and then the person pulled the min to just sell the thing and that's why the "bottom dropped out"

I have heard that heritage bids on their own auctions, maybe they have a certain floor that they feel they can safely acquire coins for their retail sales? Maybe after a while that floor sinks a bit?

Did you notice that they were all on exactly the same auction/day ? I'd say 1 person (perhaps Heritage) bought them all.

I have only seen a couple of PL half cents before and they were all raw. This really looks like a nice coin. I recently sold a proof 1854 half cent. These coins are some of my favorites in proof and PL they really pop that's for sure.

The blue you see is toning. There is a bit of light blue toning here and there, but my pictures are completely inadequate. It is quite attractive in hand.

The coin does not show up in the census because NGC failed to give it a color designation - the cert shows up as just MS-65 PL. NGC has already said they will fix this for free if I send it in as a mechanical error.

    Thanks for the comments, y'all!

That looks like a great piece, physics. I will really look forward to some better pics that show the PL surfaces that I'm sure gleam in hand. Congrats on a good find! I can relate to the dreaming that you mentioned. It's hard not to think about coins all the time! :p
