Yeah, but even those collecting just the short set will be limited by the mintages of the Jackson and the Van Buren which are each below 15,000 and each of which are sold out. So even if every owner of those coins buys a Buchanan, the Buchanan still won't hit 15,000.

I'm also collecting the Bronze Medals, they're cheap and they're pretty neat. Would be nice to find an album for them but the only one I found only had one spot for Tyler

    Nice Point! :thumb:

Yeah...I wish Dansco would come out with an album that fixes that problem.

I've been tossing around the idea of some sort of TPG multi-coin holder that has the President (Unc/Proof), FS gold (Unc/Proof), and FS bronze together in the same holder.

I was thinking something like an "X"...the President (Proof Obverse, Unc Reverse) side-by-side at the top, the FS Bronze Obverse in the middle, and the FS gold Proof (Obverse, Unc Reverse) side-by-side at the bottom. That way you can get much the same view from either side.

I want to call it the "YakPoo Collection".

Very cool idea! But the cost of grading fees and then reholdering fees in multi-coin slabs over the 10 year period will be huge!!

For a fraction of that amount, you could make your own high quality wood (or other material) which would just have cut-outs drilled into them so that you could just stick your coins (still in their original capsules - or in purchased capsules for those not having capsules) into the openings. If you don't have the skills, I'm sure you could hire a local handyman for not too much. You could also line the inset holes with felt or something so that the plastic capsules fit snugly. That way, you are keeping the First Spouse coins still in their original packaging and would be able to quickly sell them if you had to for some reason. If you had to sell the custom multi holders quickly for some reason, that would be tougher since you'll have to find someone willing to buy all 5 coins at once and you'd likely not recover the additional costs of grading/slabbing.

Most of my coins are raw at the moment and NGC multicoin holders don't cost any more than normal holders. So, the real question is "to grade or not to grade".

I know others may disagree, but I like Third Party Grading because...

    1. Protects the coins
    2. Guarantees their authenticity
    3. Makes them easier to move about, display, and store
    4. Improves the appearance and "gavitas" of the display
    5. Makes them easier to evaluate for insurance purposes
    6. Makes them more easily recoverable if stolen (assuming still in holders)
    6. Makes them more easily marketable...if/when the time comes

I predict the overall grading fees would be somewhere around $5000. That seems like a lot of money, but when you consider the collection will likely be worth over $100,000 when it's complete (2016)...and go up from there, I think an initial 5% investment to achieve the results listed above is a reasonable investment.

This doesn't take into account those people who are looking to build a liberty set who haven't yet scored all the others. There are still people looking for either a Van Buren and lots looking for a Jackson that don't have them. I believe a couple went up on Ampex this week and they almost instantly sold out.

In other words, people will buy this coin who don't yet have a Jackson or Van Buren. This is one of the more fun things about coin collecting something such as this.

this the only gold coin from the mint that might be affected by the rising of gold price. the first spouse 1/2 oz 24K .999 fine gold coin. if the london average gold price increase to over $1,150.00 an ounce. then the u.s. mint will up its first spouse gold coin by $25.00 each.

    proof - $729.00 to $754.00
    unc - $716.00 to $741.00

if these four type of gold coins were still available from the mint. then:
UHR double eagle unc one ounce - $1,489.00 to $1,539.00
09w am buffalo one ounce proof - $1,410.00 to $1,460.00

I know that some of you are having fun trying to pick which of these spouse coins will be the biggest loser of the bunch, in the hopes that it will ultimately become a winner in the long run :)

In looking at the list of coins to come, I'm wondering if it'll be the Alice Paul coin. The coin is completely unrelated to the First Spouse program and should have been another Liberty design since President Arthur didn't have a First Spouse. She was born during the last year of Arthur's administration and didn't even do the work she became famous for until about 30 years later. I can't imagine people outside of current First Spouse collectors coming in just for this one coin (like they would for a famous first spouse or for one of the Liberty coins). Alternatively, I can see some people skipping this one because it's not a First Spouse, thereby causing a very low mintage... thoughts???

Yup, yup...ridiculous! ...especially when you consider some of the wonderful
Liberty designs they had to choose from. Can you imagine if they fashioned a coin after the Indian Head Penny? ...WOW! Although (truth be known), they really should choose the Barber Liberty design. :thumb:

They could give a gold/bronze medal to Alice Paul like they did Byron Nelson...no reason to waste a FS slot on her. I wonder if this is something they can reconsider. Perhaps the 2010 Congress might be able to change this before it's too late.

On the other hand, I bought Joe's 2007 four (4) coin boxes to display the Liberty series...I would be in trouble if they made a fifth one!

the actual winners so far were the first three issues that produced 40,000 each. why?. because the gold price keep rising. the original offered price is $410.95 for unc and $425.95 for proof. the abp were almost $600.00 each without box and c.o.a. isn't it you can make a lot of money in term of percentage. the rest of the issues instead is hard to make money. sometimes you can even lose money. why?. because the mint sold those at a very much higher prices. like by next week. you are talking about proof at $754.00 and unc at $741.00.

    thursday: am - $1,146.50 pm - $1,142.00
    friday: am - 1,156.00 pm - $1,152.50
    currently close: $1,161.40/$1,162.40

i think the average will pass $1,150.00. so the first spouse gold will go up. only three days to decide to buy more or not.

It is interesting that slabbed Julia's seem to be very rare and when one does show up, it goes for a pretty good price. PF70 of this coin, when one shows up, has been going for over $900 and I've seen a couple go for over $1,000 even on ebay. This for a coin that is still available from the mint.

From just a financial perspective, this is the kind of return that existed with the UHR with 115K mintage. My guess is that people who have laughed at these coins won't be laughing so much in a few years.
