I believe they were promoted heavily by some big company back then and the markets been pretty much a falling knife for the expensive ones for a while. There are some great designs for sure like the Oregon/Stone Mountain/Lexington/California/Hawaii/San Diego etc, but after watching the higher grade ones I had go down for a decade even during a hot market I'm done with the series. If I were to get any again theyd be cheap like 30 dollar lower graded ones. It also doesnt help that a number of them have numerous different date/mm as they were repeated over and over which makes very few people actually want to do a full set
I never worry about the coins that I won't have and concentrate on the ones I'm going to get. The ones that I own that I thought I'd never get, I found a way and made it happen.
Just one coin on my list. It's the 1909 VDB Matte Proof Lincoln. Can't bring myself to spend that kind of money.
Mines more of a can’t afford list. At the top would be a $4 Gold Stella. I’d be happy with any grade. Hoping to hit the lottery one day so I can get one.
My primary focus has been a US Type Set. There are coins I am still seeking and others that will require a major windfall. I try to buy nice quality coins. I have one details coin. Still seeking: 1793 half cent draped bust heraldic eagle half dime liberty seated quarter with motto high relief Peace dollar coronet and Indian head no motto eagles liberty head no motto double eagle St Gaudens Arabic numeral double eagles, with and without motto. It's a matter of cash on hand to purchase these missing coins, although the first two items are really tough to find in a decent quality. I have sent another tranche of my space collection to auction so I'll be able to fill in a few missing holes in December. I just hope the price of gold stays low. Major windfall coins: flowing hair chain reverse large cent flowing hair wreath reverse large cent 1796 quarter Gobrecht dollar capped bust gold draped bust gold capped bust gold St Gaudens double Eagle with Roman numerals
