Thats co Thats conservative compared to nowadays. I really don't have a cutoff. I look for AU58 or better even for the moderns. unless it is silver then it goes into a box. My latest two silvers from the coinstar are a 64 Canadian 10 cents and a 1945 Merc.
My cutoff is dead presidents (DPs) ... nothing against them personally … I admire most of them. It’s mostly a matter that once a DP portrait goes on a coin, artistic innovation for the obverse comes to a screeching halt. Presumably it would be considered disrespectful to remove a DP’s portrait from a coin. I still have a couple of rolls of proof Rosies acquired in the 80s. That pretty much ends my US dates in the 1940s except for commems. Still leaves more than I’ll ever be able to collect. Cal
Yes, I am struggling to get my head around the history of the Roman emperors after Constantine the Great. The murdering and killing in the 200s was enough to make my head spin, but I finally got them all ... less a few usurpers who didn't get anywhere. I am dabbling with the emperors in the 300s. I was working on the pieces I have yesterday.
So far as modern coins go, I buy the silver Proof sets and used to buy the commemoratives. I am getting away from the commemoratives because there are too many of them, and the costs are getting high. I did buy a set of Mint State Franklin Half Dollars in an album mainly because they didn't cost a fortune, and I admire the design. I have a set of silver Roosevelt dimes for the same reason.
A man after my own heart! Coincidentally, I've been working on a guide book to my collection that lays out the interesting aspects of history for people that want to look through my coins. I just finished the first draft this morning. I tried to include a comprehensive list of people with Roman bust coins (even the ones that I'll never own), and Constantine through Theodosius are included. Might help with "getting the head around" I posted a thread about it in the Ancient Coins section.
