I have had some pretty good finds the past few weeks: I've found a good trick is to check the Coinstar right after they've been used. As I went to check a Coinstar a guy walked up to it with a jar of coins. All I could do was glance at the reject slot in passing. It was empty. But I waited in the distance for the guy to finish redeeming his coins. As soon as he walked away I went up to it. I "played the part" pressing the screen to read about crypto to buy some time in case he walks back. I wait for him to disappear and what do you know? Four silver dimes and a 1938 Canadian nickel were waiting for me. Then another time some high school girls were using a Coinstar. I could see the reject tray was full as I walked by. I left the area and came back five minutes later after they were done. I picked up some nice change including the 1942 wheat cent and five centavos from Ecuador. Finally, on another day I observed a guy redeeming a jar of coins. I walked over after he was done and found a nice 1950-S dime. On other occasions I found some kind of ring-type thing with an ornate edge. Perhaps it is silver. And also an exotic mystery copper coin from 2005. I also found this token not too long ago: Perhaps it is some kind of Prohibition-era token? It appears to be quite old and to have seen some notable circulation. Anyway, some may argue it is unethical to wait around and not inform the Coinstar users of what they are leaving behind. But that is not my job. My job is to find silver, foreign coins, and other odds and ends that are left in the reject slot.
I've probably cemented my reputation at this point as "that old white guy who checks the CoinStar for loose change Every. Single. Time he comes to the store -- and then just leaves it on the counter." I figure a couple of bucks of change will make a lot more difference to some of the other regular shoppers than it does to me -- but silver, and the occasional foreign, and sometimes Wheaties, those do make it into my pocket.
. I like that thought process. When I check every CS I encounter I pocket the finds and don't check it till I get home. I might start scouring the spoils right there and pocketing only the silver and wheaties. Your way is definitely more my style. Thanks @-jeffB
My son came home and had a pocket full from the coinstar. I have taught him well. US, Canada, Mexico, UAE, Iran, and a token included. He kept the US.
Lost a dime. I had to go to 2 stores. The first store there were 2 brownies stuck together in the slot. But on the floor was a number of clean zincs. The next store there was a decent scoop in the slot, and a dime on the inside grill shelf. But some of them went flying in the car and there's probably a dime that found it's way into that carpet hole under the seat where the works for the seat go (to make it go back and forth.) 62 cents, but it should have been .72.
When I worked DC and Nothern Va. I found lots of world coins. But any coin that isnt a us cent to a quarter that doesn't match those coins will be rejected. 1 coin as such if fed in quickly will kick out a mess of change. Numerous times I have found money that should of been counted kicked out along with a Canadian dime or even a silver Roosevelt dime.
Yes Paddy that used to be the case until they "fixed" a lot of the machines in my area. Some years ago I would often get an entire reject slot full of coins. Most of which should have been counted, along with some silvers, wheaties, halfs etc. I think in those days it was important to feed the coins at a slow normal rate and if they were dumped in all at once, many got bypassed and rejected, (just a theory). Another theory is that the internal reject slot was full and so they were dumping everything in the outer slot. (Or the machine was malfunctioning.) And then another theory is that the user was either in a hurry or unaware of the return slot and after dumping in a years worth of change would just take the receipt and leave. But who knows really. Things have been weak in my area lately and I can only assume the previous client dumped a very large jar of change. How else could 2 silvers be in the same slot? (If someone was dumping a collection there would be dozens.)
Yeah the gremlins were on line today , for some reason it tripled posted and when hit post then it deleted the text. I was im not rewriting it again.
