My son always keeps an eye out for additions to his old dad's coin collection. He was at a 7/11 that had one of those car air hoses. A guy said, "Hey dude, need to pump up my ride but this machine won't take those big dollar coins. You got any one dollar bills, I'll trade you". My boy said, "Sure", and gave him 2 ones for what he thought were 2 Ike dollars. When he got home he called me and said he got 2 large dollars and took them out of his pocket and said, "Dad, woot! I just now looked at them and they say Peace on them, from the 1920s." He brought them over after lunch and I was going to give him melt price for them but he said, "Just get us pet kibble. The fur babies need dog and cat food". So for the price of pet food I added 2 more Peace dollars to the stack. :)

    Interesting.
Who carries Peace dollars around and spends them at face value?
Did you check them for authentication?
There is a back story on those... someone's collection go missing.

Nice but I agree, someone’s collection has been robbed.

I’ve never met anyone that carries one in their pocket. I’ve heard of doing so to wear it down in order to get a low grade for a low ball set. But I don’t know anyone that does that.

My guess would be a person that dug into somebody else's coin collection and didn't know any better. :(

Or, maybe it was a person that just wanted to gift something cool to the kid in an unassuming manner!

iF a person gifted a kid some piece dollars, that person should have also educated the kid.
Maybe they did and talking to the kid was like talking to a wall.

Who knows no serial numbers to track, So it's a done deal.
Your Son knows to gather them all up when he comes by them.

    I went into a Circle K as a kid.
I bought a soda and got a few silver dimes back in change. :wideyed:
When I spot them I always ask if the clerk has more of them in the register.
This time Yes there were a few dollars more in the drawer.
    I bought them all.
The clerk said those kids (pointed to some kids in the store) got quarters for dimes to use in the pinball machine after they played the quarters they already had...Yup, wonder if the pinball vendor found some silver in those machines.

Sure I still have them dimes, what sorta question is that :D

I couldn't tell you which ones they are from the lot, but there in there somewhere.

I asked my son when he came over what the guy looked like that had the Peace $$. He said, "Probably late teens, early 20s. Driving a 2020 BMW. Dad, no way that goober could rack that ride unless his folks footed the bill or he cashed a boatful of bitcoin". We both agreed he probably rooted through his granddad's nightstand and "found" some spare change.
The coins look to be the real deal. The 1923 S weight was 26.75 & 26.76 grams. The 1924 was 26.78 and 26.79 grams. Both had a standard 1.5" diameter.

Or inherited. If we kicked off tomorrow, I guess our kids would be able to do the same thing -- but I hope we've raised them well enough that they wouldn't splurge on a luxury car (the gift that keeps on taking), and I know they know better than to spend coins from the collection at face value.

I often wear a 1922-S Peace dollar mounted on a chain necklace. The story is my mother received this particular Peace dollar in her change at a Wal-Mart. Eventually she gave it to me. Apparently the previous owner harshly cleaned it, which is why I turned it into a necklace.

My point is, the average person has no idea of the value of coins they inherit from deceased grandparents. Which is why silver dollars occasionally get spent for face value. My peers would sometimes ask why I’m “wearing a$$ quarter around my neck?”
