I've been reading The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents by David Lange, and noticed that he speculates as to whether original rolls may still be found for various dates going all the way back to 1909. I did not realize rolls had been around this long and was wondering if anyone had information on just when the advent of rolls came about and also I thought it would be great to see some photos of some old rolls if anyone has some to share. [Edit: I guess you can't edit titles. That was supposed to be "old" and not "oldes."]
The only old rolls I have are 1976 Lincoln rolls. I do not have a camera and do not think they would scan well. On top of your question does anyone no where to find old coin wrappers from the early 1900's? Regards, Stan
Stan, My oldest rolls go back to probably the late '50's. At least that's what the Ebay sellers told me! These are .25 cent rolls. I'll try to post a photo when I get home. Hopefully others here will have some old rolls to show us. I'm also extremely interested in hearing the history of the coin roll. Like I said, until reading David Lange's book, I did not even think rolls came into use until the '40's or so. Thanks, Jody
I've seen pics of original Indian Cent rolls posted on other forums, so they go back awhile. Of course, most of the early rolls have been broken up by now given the value of high grade early examples of U.S. coins.
Thanks for that info. I had no idea rolls went back that far. Do you know if the standard(at least for the cent) has always been the .50 cent roll, or was it different way back when the "penny" would actually buy something?
I don't know how far rolls go back either, but when my grandparents gave me my first Morgans they were in rolls of 20. I wish I still had the paper, but I didn't think they were worth anything then. I do know they were stamped from a bank in Tulsa with a 1901 date. Guy~
