I’m really not into toned coins but when I bought this coin a quarter of a century ago it was white. No toning at all. Now it’s a beautiful natural toned coin on both sides. It’s still in the original flip as when I bought it. It’s an 1874-CC Trade Dollar in strong XF or low AU condition. Only 1,373,200 were minted with this being the 8th highest mintage. Not counting the proof only issues toward the end of the run or varieties, there were only 17 different coins in this series. The color has grown to the darker side but it’s blue with a little purple. I did my best to show off the color of this natural beauty.
Thank you and I think she is beautiful as well. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at when I pulled her out of the box. I remember buying her. I hemmed and hauled due to the price but it was well worth it. Just seemed high back in the mid 1990’s. Lol
Be careful with this. The coin is not too far away from a terminal (black) condition. You may want to consider conservation and different storage conditions.
So far it’s the only coin in the box that toned. I’ve posted a number of them lately and I’ll be posting more but this is the only one that toned like this.
I wish I could get the colors to show better but a stronger light just reflects the plastic on the flip.
Nice trade dollar. I have a raw 76 cc that was white when I bought it, and toned incredibly fast through blue/rose to a shade similar to yours. Other "white" coins stored similarly barely toned at all.
There are some nice ones out there. I’m not a big fan of toning but I do like a few. I just don’t buy them toned. I keep them do long and they tone on there own.
