I was at my LCS yesterday, and the shop owner told me that JA is stopping CAC and opening up a new TPG. He said the announcement was supposed to come at the Chicago show but for some reason it didn't. I for one would welcome a new legit player in the TPG market as both PCGS & NGC have ticked me off for different reasons, but unless they are prepared to create a registry that allows both PCGS & NGC coins, I doubt that I would consider submitting to them.
Some one told me yesterday that CAC was still going to be around. he said JA is going to be an investor only in the new TPGS and coins they slab are not guaranteed to be stickered. As usual, all kinds of stories going around and only the principals know the truth! I started this thread because a reliable source told me one thing: "There is going to be a new TPGS backed by very deep pockets and JA is involved." I was "fishing" for more info. Back in the mid-1980's before PCGS, I was walking around a major coin show and turned down one aisle to see Rick Montgomery (then at the ANA in CO) chatting with 3 or 4 dealers. As soon as they saw me all the talking stopped. I said hello to Rick and kept going. I'm 100% sure that was about Rick joining the "newest" grading service (PCGS). You should not start a major TPGS without a skilled authenticator.
Yes. Unfortunately, I lost about the first twenty lines of my reply so I deleted the rest rather than try to rewrite it.
Oh, snap! I remember this! One time, I replied to ed wood's bravado with this post (below), and he responded by telling me that he was Martin Shkreli's friend! Makes me wonder what happened to all flavor here at Coin Talk... -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For People. You know, the different opinions and stuff People. Impertinent jerks don't collect coins? So.....
I am very interested in your thoughts of how this would be achieved, that would produce the result that you are basing the need for another Grading Service as an improvement. Could you explain?
The question is why wouldn't we as long as they are a legitimate TPG. Competition breeds excellence. Imagine the opposite. What if there were fewer TPG's? I have coins graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. All four companies have a place in the coin market and I say the more the merrier.
