This one was from my 97 coin junk bin post yesterday. It has me stumped. One side reads something like: G.M. FRIESKE 20 RATHSKELLER Other side is pretty much unreadable. I haven't had any luck so far on Numista with token/exonumia searches. I'm not 100% sure on the lettering for the name. C vs G, M vs N vs H etc. It's a little easier to read in hand if I rotate it to catch the light, but still very faint. Any help would be much appreciated! Not even sure what country it's from. Thanks.
A Rathskeller is a tavern in a basement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratskeller G H Frieske appears to have been the proprietor of such a tavern in Berlin, and even published a commemorative booklet about it: https://www.abebooks.com/Gedenkbüchlein-Berliner-Rathskeller-Enthaltend-Abbildungen-Kellerräume/31204763593/bd So, this is likely a post 1879 beerhall token, issued in Berlin by Frieske for use in his tavern (possibly with some connection to in Berlin city hall).
Thanks! I don't collect tokens seriously, and don't have any reference books for them. Does the reference have a picture? The reverse is unreadable on mine and I'm curious to what they are supposed to look like. Also, was there a date range?
