First of all, a cent struck again by nickel dies is not a "mule". It is a "double denomination" error. Second, a genuine double denomination error would be dominated by the secondary nickel design. That's not the case here. This simply appears to be a badly corroded cent. Any reported letters are likely to be nothing more than wishful thinking.
To mikediamond, To correct you its stamped with a penny second with the nickel underneath. The picture I gave gives the penny no justice like I've said.It was done with my scanner.
I presume you are proposing that a cent planchet was struck by nickel dies and then struck again by cent dies. This is just about impossible, at least without a lot of help. It's far more likely that you are simply imagining letter-like shapes in the random pattern of bumps on this badly corroded coin.
Sorry, when I get good pics you will see. Its not impossible, I have it here right in front of me. Random pattern of bumbs, that cracks me up. I really dont care its still just a penny to me. Im not into coin collecting that much its just a pocket change hobby, I was just curious about it, and thought I could get some good info. Your negatives mikediamond cant take away what sits in front of me ,nice try thoe. It does exist and I dont care what condition its in, I think its neat just to have. Later!
I think you should know that Mike isn't trying to be mean...he is a expert in the Error world and is know through the Coin Hobby....I think if you knew what he knows about errors you wouldn't say that....there are kinds of errors that just can't be done....like a cent struck on a nickel planchet....the planchet is just too big to fit in the striking area....and many other things that just can't happen.... Speedy
Speedy, It can happen! Check out Mike Byers Website at www.mikebyers.com and go to Type Errors (Post 1900) and you will see several Lincoln Cents Struck on Nickel Planchets. Frank
I would wonder about Mr Byers How can a planchet fit in a die collar when the size of the planchet is bigger than the collar would let fit?? You see my dealer had one that a friend wanted slabbed....it came back Fake...after talking with some guys that have collected many years we got to thinking about that...since the coin wasn't all out of shape and such then it had to be struck in a collar...and that can't happen with the size of the planchet is larger than the collar... Speedy
But what can happen is a cent planchet being struck with nickel dies - the smaller cent planchet fits inside the larger nickel collar just fine. The hard part to understand is how that struck planchet then gets into the cent press and is struck again with cent dies. Don't ask me to explain how the second part happens - I don't know. But I do know that "6 cent" coins do exist and have been authenticated as such. It could well be, as Mike said, it had help.
Sorry but this reminds me of a story I read about last year.Image of Virgin Mary on a toasted cheese sandwich, sold to GoldenPalace.com for big bux! Even looks like it's been slabbed. No offense intended.
I went and looked again...and they aren't NICKEL planchets....they are Cu-Ni Planchet and he says that he thinks they are "possible Mint Experiment Test Piece"....no where does he say it was an Error of a cent struck on a nickel planchet... Speedy
It was a nickel struck on a cent planchet. Mike I take criticism fine. I just cant understand when im looking at something and someone tells me thats impossible. I just thought someone would have some info on this. Im sorry if I sounded abrasive. Believe me it does exist im just trying to see how. Again sorry mike. .
The planchets are 75%-25% Cu-Ni planchets which are the same composition as the planchets used for Nickels! Also, it is stated that the cents were struck on full size Nickel planchets. In case he does not refer to planchets (full size Nickel planchets) that are the same size as the Nickel planchets, there is still one under "All Other U.S. Errors" where a Roosevelt Dime was Struck Off-Center on a Nickel Planchet. Frank Note: I am sure that Peter intended that this Site to be used to obtaining information on coins such as worth, authenticity, what it is, when was it produced, etc.! I do not think that he intended it to be a Site where every Post is attacked and has to be defended which appears to pretty much be the trend. If this is going to continue to be the trend with nearly every new Thread and Post, then why should anyone want to Post a question or answer on the Forums here???!!!? Frank
But that doesn't make them a NICKEL planchet....they are made out of the same thing but are not the same thing It doesn't say anywhere that it was struck on a full size planchet that was made for a nickel...what it does say is that it is made on a planchet made OUT of nickel...and that planchet could be the same size as a cent...there isn't away that a planchet larger than the collar go into the collar and be struck....now if they were broadstruck...I would see it might happening. Ah ha....right there....that doesn't prove the things before but it proves what I just said...a planchet can't go in a collar that is smaller than the planchet...this coin was struck off center...and that means that it wasn't in a collar. Amen...and that is what all of us Moderators hope to do. I haven't seen that..??...I have seen some points that have been great...somethings just aren't going to happen and when that comes here we try to show how and why. Speedy
Well Speedy, I view it much differently and seen it too often on this and many other sites! I hate to see people come here or elsewhere to get help (information) or offer help (information) but spend most of their time defending their Threads, Posts or even their' item itself. Since I do not have the time or patience to be party to either, please remove my User Name (unsubscribe) me from the Coin Talk Forum Website and refer my request to someone who can. To Everyone Else on the Forums, It has been a pleasure to receive and give help on the forums here! I thank you all and wish you the best of wishes for the upcoming Holidays! Sincerely...Frank E. Ferrell
Thats to bad, Frank was a good guy hes one of the few who helped and believed me. Thanks frank for all the good info, and looking for answers to my question. IT DOES EXIST A PENNY FIRST STRUCK WITH A NICKEL. Someday I will find out how.
Hey Ruinz I don't think any of us have said that it doesn't exist...I think what we said is that it would be rare... Have you gotten some photos of it yet??...I would love to see some! Speedy
