Help me decide whether or not to keep this coin. I'm wavering over whether or not to call this one AU. If it is, I keep it. If not, it goes back. Although a little homely (IMO) because of the toning, I don't see any reason to think it's been altered. The mark visible on the cheek is quite exaggerated in the pics by comparison to its' actual appearance to the eye.

Well, I think it's been cleaned by some fashion, but how many raw barbers haven't?

For details I don't see anything that would detract from an AU designation.

    Yeah I'd say it's AU

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

    I say maybe..

..depends on how deep the gash on the cheek is. I say yes it has AU details...Mike

it looks like an AU details coin with a past cleaning that has retoned.

    Hi,
I see what looks like wear on the obverse on the high points of the leaves and the cheek under the eye.
Also, there has to be some original luster for the AU designation. This one looks like upper end XF to me.
    Have Fun,

OK, I think I'm going to keep it in view of the price paid. The coin was obtained at auction, and is not the one which was pictured for sale. The seller admitted that when I questioned him, blaming his hired photographer for screwing the pics up. So, do I offer positive or neutral feedback? The auction was deceptive, but I ended up getting sufficient value for my money.

    What would you do?

positive or neutral? Man, that's bait and switch - and that's a hands down negative feedback, if you ask me. Problem there is that I'd wager he's pending his feedback for you based on your feedback of him... this, too, is a common ebay seller scam.

It isn't a question of sufficient value for your money. You completed an auction for a coin pictured - then, I'm guessing, you received a lesser quality coin in its place. Deceptive is an understatement - that's grounds for downright fraud. if it were truly accidental, the seller would offer to send you the coin that was pictured and politely request that you return what you received. If it were really an accident, the seller would make this offer without being asked to do so.

He's hoping you will settle for what you got - an inferior coin and an excuse.

    Hi,
For whatever my 2 cents is worth and according to my new ANA Grading Standards book it will grade AU. BTW I believe that line on the face is a die gouge or beginning of a die crack as it appears to be raised instead of cut.

Another vote for AU. I'd definitely leave neutral or negative feedback, although the seller might be upset if you don't give him an opportunity to refund your money.

Yes, AU-50/53 I'd say, even if it has been cleaned at some point.

I'd return the coin and ask for 100% of my money back.
