So much is in this box it’s going to take awhile to get through all of it. There are a number of slabs but I haven’t looked at them yet. Here’s the coin I promised to post yesterday. It’s an unmarked, meaning no chop marks, Trade Dollar. It’s dated 1875-S in the original scratched 2 x 2 flip from when I bought it years ago. Still has the price I paid as well. Just $90.00 for her. You can’t do that today. Thete is a Berry under the Eagles talon so it’s a Reverse 1. Also an Obverse 1 as her extended hand only has 3 fingers and a thumb. No less than a VF grade on her.
I purchased it from a very reputable coin dealer a quarter of a century ago. It might look strange but it’s the real thing.
So strange. It has the color and look of Chinese fakes. I used to troll around Chinese street markets back in 2016 or so, and all of their silver coins had this specific look.
Well it’s been in the same flip for 25 plus years and that doesn’t help. And the light used may not have been the best but despite its looks on this thread I can definitely state that it was minted in the USA by the San Francisco Mint in 1875.
I must agree that the color was questionable when I first saw it. Now to be honest I wouldn't touch it... Not that I am 100% sure that its fake as I am not...however even though he has had it 25 years , I'm relatively sure that the Chinese were making them back then too. Of course I hope its legitimate...
Nice Trade Dollar CN. I wonder if @Jack D. Young can offer some of his expertise on the authenticity?
@Collecting Nut - age has nothing to do with anything in this case... fakes of these have been coming out of China since the 80s at least. This example displays wide rims and an odd patina - I stand by my original assertion.
I never said she had anything to do with anything. I merely stated when I acquired the coin and where I bought it. If you knew the fellows that owned the place you would know what I mean. You’re entitled to your opinion but that opinion is based on a photo.
