Hi everybody I’m brand new. I was wasting time looking through a jar of wheat pennies my grandfather left and found something odd. It looks like the a penny stamped on a nickel. I can’t see any evidence of it being a gag gift but I’m not expert. What is this that I have??
That Cent has a coin bezel. It was added on. It is like a metal frame. And then it was plated. Novelty item.
You can see here where the bezel it was probably soldered or sometimes even clamped down onto the cent.
You can't have a penny on a nickel planchet. You can only have coins on the same size planchet or smaller, not larger.
In reality. You cant have a cent struck onto a Nickel planchet because a blank nickel planchet would not fit into the chamber to strike a cent. chamber is smaller. @Michael K just explained it.
@William lindsay Is there something you want to share with us? Start a new separate thread with a file of your image that shows.
Also the nickel planchet won't pass through the feeding tubes on a press set up for cents So the nickel planchet couldn't even get to the coining chamber.
Somebody somewhere is reading this thread and saying "Ok, we can't sell it on Etsy or ebay for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars as a penny on a nickel planchet error.
