Hello, I am trying to figure out what caused this anomaly. The coin is a 1983 (P) Lincoln Cent and the area in question is on the reverse above the word "UNITED". Any ideas?
Looks like a little edge running that got bent over during circulation above the TED. Minor issue. The rest is from a worn die
First, it’s made of zinc, second it was minted by a worn die and third it looks like a portion of the rim was bent onto the coins surface.
A worn die certainly would explain the extra chunky material along the rim which is not bent over- it is full height as the other devices. What about the smoother material, specifically above the "D"? Just worn differently with perhaps some grease in the worn die area?
It looks to my eye a cud starting to form... cuds I associate with the end of the die life...that die was just about there.
