What might this excellent condition Jefferson error nickel be worth. Do you see doubling of nose, lips, etc? There may also be faint letters in this area. ?? Is this grease from the minting process?
Sorry, but it's just stains from the black stuff. Was not done at the mint and not an error of any kind
@Chris D. …that is most assuredly not grease from the minting process. It is accumulated dirt and debris and maybe stains. You won’t ever know until you remove it, but first you need to know how. So learn how to perform an acetone bath, there are many, many threads here on Coin Talk that will educate you. Unless slabbed, always take the coin out of a sleeve or flip to take pics for posting. Ensure there are no glare spots so members can see the whole coin. What I see is a 1941-S Jefferson with moderate wear which is actually a good thing for an 81 yo coin. You could go to PCGS Photograde and compare to find out the ballpark wear grade, but since I just recently graded about 90 Jeffersons, I happen to know the rough grade of your coin, based on your photos to be somewhere around XF40 to AU50. If the former, it lists for around 40 cents at NGC, and if by some better analysis in-hand or better pictures it managed to be graded the latter, then it lists for $1.50. Varieties exist, but there is no way to determine anything along these lines without some really good close-ups. Good luck checking for them to ascertain if your coin has them. You’ve been a member for 5 years so I presume you know how to do this. In a nutshell, it is not in “excellent” condition and needs a lot of TLC to determine the higher grade…imo…Spark
