A perfect example is the Jefferson 71 S no S proof nickel. It was and wasn't counted. There was a space for it and I cannot recall how they handle it. As the mintage of 1731 pcs. However there's other series that have low mintages in the series. So my question is why? Why even consider it? As it isnt fair to those who cannot obtain one....nor is it fair to those who did.
One reason I gave up on sets in general years ago. Yes I do have sets some complete, some not... as an example my Mercury dime collection and IHC each are 1 coin short of completion.
Both sets are nice sets with coins that range from F to Au.+ I don't want a roached 16 D that doesn't match the other coins in the set...and same for the1877 IHC ....at one time I had one in xf but corroded.
It didn't match the others.... so whats the difference a hole or a coin thats unbecoming of the set?
To each their own....likes as well dislikes...for the record my collection has both detailed specimens as well as proof 70 and MS specimens ....each special in their own way.

I have presented the issue on the CAC Board, for clarification. Hopefully we will learn something that assists everybody.

I don't think a TPG would willingly shoot itself in the foot concerning grading and points awarded at an increased level because of a CAC evaluation, and this has been explained to me a long time ago, but, instead of he said she said, I am always in favor of the source info explanation...with any update.

Hmmm. I guess I'll go look at mine. This wouldn't be the first time they've adjusted things drastically.
Yup, one major cut yesterday. PF69UC Bicentennial proof silver quarter took a -3100 hit. lol Oh well.

Both PCGS and NGC should periodically re-examine and, where appropriate, change the weights/points give to various denomination, date, mint and variety coins. Weights/points are supposed to represent relative difficulty of collecting a particular coin, and this changes over time.

The revaluation dates should be at regular intervals, say 5 or 10 years, and announced repeatedly in advance because there will be collectors who will see their set rankings go down. Repeated and prominent announcements of an upcoming revaluation date should lessen the screaming when it happens.

To my knowledge, PCGS has never changed weights, and it’s long overdue. For example, among CC Morgan dollars, the 1881 has twice the weight of the rarer 1890 and 1891, and the 1892 has the same weight of the rarer 1879 and 1893. Weights should correspond to current conditions, not those of a quarter century ago.

I agree Cal and have no issue with them updating and revaluation of scoring.. just the lack of any kind of warning. Suddenly dropping 30 spots in the rankings with no explained reasons tends to get people upset :D

I dont think theyve ever proactively made wide spread adjustments, but there have been specific changes in the past when convinced by someone lobbying them to do so. They dont seem to want to rock the boat or try and fix something that aint broken and you basically need to convince them theres a good reason to make the change

NGC continually reassesses the scoring based on price, rarity, populations, and to fix previous errors of scores that were accidentally too high to begin with (errors in their original scoring based on varieties, designations etc).

Many people have learned to look at the points tables and find some readily available cheap coin worth boat loads of points (clearly because of an oversight in the scoring tables) then use it in a specific slot of a set. Then when NGC occasionally cleans up their scoring tables they complain because they “lost points”.

If you’re doing the registry as a means to be #1 you may want to consider a different hobby. Unless you like chasing your tail and complaining as a secondary hobby. :D

Just go with PCGS and you won’t have that problem, I don’t own one NGC slabbed coin and probably never will..

Not sure what that has to do with the topic of the NGC registry. But, if you put all your eggs in one basket you may eventually regret it. The reputation of PCGS has certainly decreased over the past 5 or so years.

Good luck in your endeavors and blind faith in PCGS. :cigar:

No blind faith…LOL, but it’s not rocket
science PCGS slabbed coins, will always
demand top dollar, just take a look around, it’s no secret
