I went and visited a local bullion dealer I have not seen in quite some time. When I walked into the shop they asked what I was looking for. I told them that I was looking for Morgan and Peace Dollars. The gentleman pointed at their monitor on the counter and said they had a special on a 19 coin roll mix of Morgan and Peace Dollars for $570.00 or $30.00 per coin. I thought that sounded decent, and asked if I could take a look at the roll. I was pretty happy with what I saw for the price and bought it. As it turned out there was only 1 Peace Dollar, which didn't bother me one bit. The roll contained the following, all are circulated: 1894-O Morgan 1904-O Morgan AU 1898-S Morgan 1899-S Morgan 1900-S Morgan 1901-S Morgan 1902-S Morgan XF/AU!! 1904-S Morgan (3) 1921-S Morgans (3) 1921-D Morgans 1900 Morgan 1902 Morgan 1903 Morgan 1921 Morgan 1925-S Peace Dollar
A great pick up in my view. Love the fact they all participated in commerce and had been through a few hands. If only they could talk! Thanks for sharing those
My favorite kind of coins are those that had to work for a living. Very nice and I don't know why anyone would put them to melt.
On my way to the other side of the river to check every coin and bullion shop. Great finds as always!
@jtlee321 …Did you have to buy the whole roll, or could you have selected individually? I’m thinking to get the mix price you had to buy all. Personally, I see only 11 I would take the time to work with. What did the Peace ballpark grade at? And some of those could qualify for conservation actions. All in all a really good acquisition. Some members here think every Morgan is a keeper. I disagree. I have a really tough choice over straight wear Morgans and Peace that have advanced wear F12 or lesser condition. My reasoning is wear or damage has deteriorated the coin so that die markers or clashing has been obliterated. To this end, these coins can have basic VAMs determined but because of the wear, you will never really know. JMHO…Spark
I don't mind Peace Dollars. I've bought quite a few recently, mostly with very cool die cracks with displaced field breaks. But the overall design, I just prefer the look of the Morgan. When they told me it was a mix of Morgan and Peace Dollars, I expected a heavier mix of Peace Dollars. I just realized, I left the image of the lone Peace Dollar out. Here it is, it's pretty worn, but no complaints. But here is why I bought the lot.
Yes, I had to buy the entire lot. Had I been able to choose which to buy, I would have skipped the heavily worn Peace Dollar, all of the 1921 Morgan's and possibly a couple of others. I will be listing a majority of these on eBay. I will probably end up keeping just the 1902-S, but I'm still thinking about it. My LCS has a very nice looking 1878 8TF that I am on the fence about. The profit from this lot would help to land it for a low out of pocket price.
I was mostly surprised that it wasn't full of '83-O, '84-O, '86, '87, early S mints the typical stuff. These were all at least better/late date mm stuff.
