I guess I would like to know how they are authenticated as ancient? Seeing that many are "one offs", etc with nothing to compare it to?

No dispersions on the coin in question that has been looked at by experts (and I am certainly not one). Just interested on how this is determined..

Similar approach to determining ancients as a whole. Weight, style, design, patina, wear etc.. There is a whole area of study on it.. You can pretty well tell a modern copy of an ancient once you are experienced enough dealing with the real deal..
