I am new to precious metals. I've bought silver rounds, some eagles, maple leaves and some 1 oz bars. I bought a number of girls gone wild bars because they seemed priced low for 1 oz. I found out later that they are layered. They say they are .999 silver 100 mills. That is 1/10 of an inch and that is the thickness of the bars. How can I find out how much silver is in them?

What are the dimensions of the bar?

I did a quick google search and found a discussion on the Kitco forums

Ultimately it is saying in the metal plating industry 1 mill is not 1/1000 but actually 1/1,000,000 of an inch

Whatever mill means as the term "mill" isn't a scientific measurement. But once you get a good answer for that, Silver weighs 5.525 oz/cubic inch. SO once the surface area of the bar is determined, and you know what they really mean as to the "mill", if it is a 1/10 inch, multiply the surface area by .5525 oz. If it is 1/10,000 inch, multiply the surface area by .0005525 oz.

A reference on silver plating says .00002” to .002” is the normal range depending on intended use

I suspect it is the latter myself.

If we knew it was really pure copper under the pure silver, a specific gravity approach would work.

  6. Girls Gone Wild silver bars are layered and not solid silver. I guess beauty really is only skin deep. TC

"layered" is just a fancy word for plated used by shysters to try and make you think you're actually getting something for your money.

Don't buy plated items for bullion content. The cost to recover the precious metal is more than the bullion will be worth. Buy them if you like the way they look.

And don't try to sell plated items as bullion. Karma is a female dog.
