This coin was posted in another forum and it's authenticity was questioned. Your thoughts.

I always start with attribution; does it appear to match my example?

Yes, the date was the focal point of most of the naysayers. The thin 1.

Wrong reverse for the date as well...

I actually have an OC example in my Dark Side Collection:

It looks fine to me but it’s stained. Probably from the ground.

Op's coin is fake. Look at the line on the reverse rim going all the way around the coin. Also look at STATES. Too mushy. Coin appears to me as cast.

LIBERTY also has a funny alignment.

To what date/variety does the reverse belong?

Clearly a modern forgery. It's closest to an N-9 with the point of the leaf under S2 under the right inside of the S, but the obverse is wrong and N-9 doesn't have a centering dot on the reverse. All other varieties have the leaf right of S2.

When in doubt ask for and believe in @Jack D. Young observations and help.

Agree. Among the genuine reverse dies of 1826, the subject coin most closely resembles Reverse H of N-9 but is not an exact match.

The obverse of the subject coin matches none of the obverses of 1826. In particular, the top serif of the 1 in the date on genuine coins is shaped quite a bit differently than that of the subject coin. Genuine coins have a long, curved top of the top serif. Subject coin's top serif is shorter and is composed of two straight lines rather than a continuous curve.

Clearly another fake. For me, the first step in authentication of any coin is the attribution.

Based on the 1833 N-5 obverse and 1833 N-3 reverse; I also state attribution is the key.

Sorry, doubled my response for some reason...

Anyway, authenticity is not in question on this one:D!

Typical Chinese “corrosion” used in their aging process.

Too flat in strike and relief it just looks wrong. Chinese fake aged to look ground found

The owner of the coin, even after being told it was counterfeit, supposedly(as said by him) took it to his local coin shop and got $140 for it.

Would love to know the coin shop.

The nightmare never ends with stuff like this...
