Op's coin is fake. Look at the line on the reverse rim going all the way around the coin. Also look at STATES. Too mushy. Coin appears to me as cast. LIBERTY also has a funny alignment.
Clearly a modern forgery. It's closest to an N-9 with the point of the leaf under S2 under the right inside of the S, but the obverse is wrong and N-9 doesn't have a centering dot on the reverse. All other varieties have the leaf right of S2.
Agree. Among the genuine reverse dies of 1826, the subject coin most closely resembles Reverse H of N-9 but is not an exact match. The obverse of the subject coin matches none of the obverses of 1826. In particular, the top serif of the 1 in the date on genuine coins is shaped quite a bit differently than that of the subject coin. Genuine coins have a long, curved top of the top serif. Subject coin's top serif is shorter and is composed of two straight lines rather than a continuous curve. Clearly another fake. For me, the first step in authentication of any coin is the attribution.
The owner of the coin, even after being told it was counterfeit, supposedly(as said by him) took it to his local coin shop and got $140 for it.
