Is that a die chip on the back of the four? And RTY looks doubled too. Pics are not the best, so it is hard to really tell. Coin is quite dirty too, but one should not try to clean it.
The horizontal on the 4 is wider that it should be and has a line separation in the middle. The 9 looks like it was struck twice.
your pictures are not clear enough when zoomed in check here if this is what you think ==> 1949-S DDOs (varietyvista.com) provide link to PCGS .. as you compared something, but we don't know what.
There are 3 doubled dies for 49S across all three sites that I use. Your MM position doesn't match any of them. The photos aren't clear enough, but if it's doubled, I would say that it's MD, or another form of worthless doubling.
The PCGS photo looks just like the varietyvista photo.I think there is something to this. I will keep the coin and keep looking. Maybe it's new variety? It's an old coin maybe I'll find something before the crud eats it. Thanks for looking!
It doesn't really matter whose photo matches another. The important factor is your coin doesn't match known examples. After 73 years of scrutiny it would be unlikely to unearth a new variety now, but stranger things have happened.
You need to be much more Clear on a number of things if we are to help you. First you need clear, focused pics. You can't see the details in your pic You keep referring to a PCGS pic. What pic? There should be a FS reference number if it's a variety. What is it? You say it matches one in varietyvista. WHICH ONE? Varietyvista has reference numbers. Do you want us to guess? Nobody likes trying to help when you have to guess at cryptic messages and poor pics. Help us help you. BTW: based on what you posted, it looks like a minor die chip or maybe MD. If it's hub doubling, why is it only only on the 4 on not on the entire date? If you don't know the die manufacturing process, check it out here before answering www.doubleddie.com/58201.html www.doubleddie.com/58222.html
The photos I refered to,PCGS and Variety Vista, are both pictures of clean undamaged coins. I didn't refer to any pictures of errors. I understand how dies are made. I was a machinist for 40 years. I understand that these dies are all inclusive. One strike equals a complete side of a coin. What I don't understand is how 2 digits in the date change and nothing else does. The nine appears,to me, to have a smaller 9 punched inside of the original 9. That would have to be punched into the die manually. The 4, I don't know. Gas bubble sounds good to me. I don't mean to cause trouble. I'm 73 and learning your craft. I know I need a new scope and I am looking for one. Believe me I will do a better search before I post a bogie again. Thanks for your help.
Being a machinist certainly helps, but do you know the specifics of making a coin die? Master hub, master die, working hub, and working die? At what steps the mottos and devices are added? When is the date added? When is the mm added? Difference between 2 step and single push hubbing? The 9 types of hub doubling? The characteristics of hub doubling vs mechanical doubling (split serifs, widening/thinning of the devices, flat shelflike appearance)? If you already know all this info, then you should be able to figure out the answer to your question. If not, those links can be very helpful. Your machinist experience should help you understand this stuff quickly, but don't assume you completely understand it (from your posts, you can tell you have more to learn). My background is materials science and I can tell you all about high temp insulating ceramics and non-oxides, but if I need to know something specific about organics/plastics, I need to find an expert. I'm not trying to be condescending, just want to help you learn and recognize that whenever you think you know a lot, you usually find out that you don't. (Happens to me even after 50+ years of ACTIVE collecting and researching)
I had CNC business for 18 years. I made some dies and molds along the way. I know there are thousand ways to make the same product. I will look up these processes you mentioned and educate myself. If you can direct me to a good read I would appreciate it. Thanks again I will try to be a little less annoying. Old dog new tricks.
