Last but not least we have coin five. It used to be a relatively new PCGS holder (without a TrueView) and is now in an even newer PCGS holder.
Please guess the grade from each time.

Note: both the GC photo and the TrueView is posted below.

    I'm guessing it was a 64 and it stayed a 64.

64 both times. Nice toning, but too many marks to be any higher.

    Reveal time:
This was another of my unfavorable results. It started as a 64 and downgraded to a 63. I needed a fifth coin for my sub and this one did not have a TrueView photo, so I included it. The thought was it would stay a 64 (or have a small chance of getting a plus for the color). Technically you could call it a 63 but the color aspect makes it a 64 most days (this just wasn't that day).

MS63. Add 1 for the market because that color is really really pretty, or what PCGS would call, "Amazing." If I'm wrong about that and it's really just really pretty, or what PCGS would call, "Positive," add 1/2 for that. As their grading is complicated for non-professional graders, I'm referencing their guidelines for further education and study: https://www.pcgs.com/eyeappeal.

I don’t understand the criteria for “plus” grades. I can see the technical grade being what it is for luster and marks, but if this coin isn’t at the top of the range for eye appeal, I don’t know what is.

Exactly, even though my grading was wrong, add it usually is, I've seen much uglier coins get a plus! But, eye appeal is one of the most subjective parts of grading. Maybe the graders had smudges on their glasses!

I really don't either. The one coin that I did get the plus on (the 88-O from the prior thread), was nice but this one has better toning. I also have an 81-S that has strong reverse toning and looks on par with many 66s but it is just a 65 (without a plus-didn't get one at NGC or PCGS).

With their market guidelines it's a technical 63 bumped to 64. I don't know why they took it down from 64, either.
