Resubmissions and Lasers--"Fingerprinting" of coins They could flag the resubmissions, I don't think they want to kill the resubmission industry which is big $$$. If a coin is stolen, only a fool would send it back as is to the same service. If you had a stolen 1871-CC $20 that was an AU58, you could simply work it over to make it look different, so the laser eyes wouldn't pick it out.
So the big surprise is no suprise. The big announcement is what was already known/expected. PCGS will have a supplementary service. Plus coins with digital footprints, HD photos and detailed desciptions that endure with the slab.
This scanning business has me interested/confused... So if you ran 10,000 Morgans same year and M.M. thought the scanner then ran each one through at a later date (no barcodes or nothing, just raw coins, it could tell them apart??? If so, that is amazing... I'd love to see a record over the years of how much each coins grades went up and down each time.. As it stands with Humans grading them, seem like ther could be a lotta room for differece of opinion....
I agree with you 100% Just keep adding to the already confusing grading charts. Who wants a plus ( + ) sign on the holder? Always find ways to make them more money. I like the new laser thing but hate the "+" crapbolla. Oh well, who ever wants to spend money on them go ahead. At the end, it's all about the money and the hobby loses the real meaning of collecting thanks to PCGS.
This announcement ending up being a big *yawn* for me. Working in the computer industry I find this whole scanning the coin business a little "suspect". First off, to do this coin scanning you would need some sort of 3D scanner (not cheap) and then how sensitive is it? I mean, if I put a fingerprint on a coin after it has already been graded would it still recognize it upon rescan and whats to prevent it from confusing it with another coin? After all, in theory, these coins were all supposed to be identical when they were minted.
Now anyone with a registry set will have to get "+" grading to "keep up with the Jones". I can see how pursuing a Registry set can be a lot of fun, but ultimately...isn't THAT the biggest TPG scam?
Yak I am on the PCGS registry and have no intention to submit my coins for plus grading. Maybe it would be different if I was leading any of the registry sets, but I doubt it. I don't think competition is the main reason I or many others are on the registry. I like to see what others have that happen to collect the same series I do and the registry is a good way to chart my progress. I think that it will be mainly dealers looking to maximize (justify) higher sale prices who will be looking to use the plus service. And I am okay with that. No one is forcing me to buy any coins.
Not only that but what if a coin is raw, and is resubmited later with some wear, is it gonna be recognized? I mean, IMO it's still nothing more than a gimmick to take some more cheese from the sleeping heads with it. :eat:
