I just acquired this Barber half. I was drawn to it because of the strength (to me) of the markings. I showed it to a friend who is much more knowledgable about coins and values and he basically went bat s&$t over it. He particularly was praising the vertical lines on the shield on the reverse. I admit he got me excited but I also know this fellow can be as full of the stuff often found in a Christmas goose. So please tell me what grade you suspect it might receive and what possible value it could offer. many thanks
There were 2,100,000 minted so it is not considered a rarity. I only see a few letters of LIBERTY and the rest are worn off of the headband so that would place this is as a VG-8 and according to the Red Book the value on that coin, date and grade is $30.00.
Point your friend to PCGS Photograde. Looks like a solid F to me, assuming it hasn't been cleaned (can't tell from these photos). I see all the letters in LIBERTY, although they're weak at the bottom. If I'm right, it's maybe closer to a $50 coin. It's a nice example, with a lot more meat than most Barbers I see. Definitely a good candidate for a mid-circulated set.
Numismedia says the coin is worth $72 in F-12. I think it would be a better idea to find out what Ebay sales go for.
I think this is either a VG-10 or more likely a F-12. It is nicely lacking a lot of surface chatter so it has great eye appeal for its grade.
