Wheat pennies??? I just finished sorting about 1/3 of a bunch of old wheats that have been hanging around for awhile. Figured it is time to clean out the crud. Now I have a couple rolls of wheat pennies that are either icky, damaged, common date low grades. Just wondering what would you do with them. eBay not worth time - wheats don't sell good for much, and I really don't want to pass on a bunch of damaged coins to somebody anyway and take chance of ruining feedback. Of course, if I did reveal that most have some type of flaw, spot or were totally bent out of shape, nobody would bid anyway. Really want them gone because they may give cooties to my other coins. ROF! Just curious what you would do. Just another thing to meditate on. Thought I would try one of the new colours for my 100th. 8)
I think that those old wheats would be great to give to a young kid(s). I know my first interests when I was a kid were those old wheat cents. I used to go to the local coin shop on my bike and dig them out of an old wooden box, filled with tons of crappy coins in cardboard holders. I would buy them at 2-3 cents apiece and loved every one of them.
Scare them Away from Collecting!!!! Put the coins in 2x2s with the DATE (and MintMark) and that's it and give them out for Halloween. I thought that you should just wrap them them and take them to the bank, but after reading the replies here, I realized that the Wheatie is almost FIFTY YEARS OLD. That is half a century. Remember while we saw Mercs and Walkers and Buffalos, we seldom saw Barbers or V-nicks in change -- talking about the mid to late 1950s and early 1960s here. So, these Wheaties will not cause cavities and might give a kid an impetus.
Why not put them back in circulation a little here a little there to get others interested in coins... I buy rolls of halves and dollars at the bank along with 2 dollar bills and spend these a little at a time. In fact gave a sacagewa out last nite to a guy who had never seen one. go figure
I would send them to me for insertion into Whitman Folders by my four year old who is just getting into coins. What better way than to get a package addressed to him and he find cents that are older than his grand parents! Just a thought...
