Was browsing Ebay last week for half dimes and saw a dark ex-jewelry coin described as 18xx-O. I recognized the reverse from somewhere, given the mintmark size. Indeed, this reverse was only used on 1838-O and a rare variety in 1839. And the obverse… NO stars! The BIN price on this one was… eight dollars and free shipping. So after waiting out the ebay standard envelope shipping, it arrived. This is my heavily discounted admission to the exclusive 1838-O half dime club. It’s corroded, rim-damaged, bent, and holed, but it’s one of 70000 minted - and one of just a couple hundred left, AFAIK. Hope you found a way to enjoy this coin.
Many collectors want nothing to do with holed coins. I have a holed type set that I enjoy a lot. Nice half dime.
Yes I now remember that you pm me...sorry been dealing with a sick pup... yes the 38o Sweet pick up....big grin
Hard life but the lack of stars an easy give away. I’ve had a couple low grade 38-o but nothing choice
It’s who we are. An attraction of your own is as legitimate as any other. As collectors none of us are immune and are free to indulge as we see fit. Anybody who says they don’t is a liar and the evidence is in an old blue Whitman 2x2 storage box shoved way back in the closet. Behind the 1982 George Washingtons and 1999 SBAs. Rick L.
