Civil War Era One Cent Postage Stamp Coins I was looking through some coins that were given to me around 20 years ago and came across 2 one cent postage stamp coins. I did some googling and found some interesting info on them. The first one has N&G Taylor & Co. and from what I have found it is one of the more rare ones, according to one site there were 11 to 15 known. The mica is not broken, the stamp is clean no soiling, the brass looks nice. Here are front and back shots of the Taylor one, the photos do not do the coin justice, esp the front shots, it is a clean coin, I will try to get better shots.
Very nice! These are rather valuable, as well. I don't know if the Taylor piece is quite as rare as 11-15 known, but it's clearly rare. We've sold 9 of all denominations, and maybe 2 or 3 of the 1c denomination. Gut feeling from reading the Heritage Auction archives: $1000, maybe more, on the Taylor; maybe $200 or so on the Drake's Plantation. These are on the currency site, not the coin site. (Keep in mind that I am by no means an expert on these and have no idea how to grade them. I also try to be really conservative on my estimates.)
Thanks! I found a value of $3250 for the Taylor from this site http://stampauctionnet.com/y/y95512.cfm
The three we've sold included two for about $1800 and one for about $4300. I shot low deliberately to cover for market downturns and the possibility that your piece isn't as nice as those we have records for.
nice, those were used before fractional currency, since after the war coins where hoarded there was a lack of change
