Not much is known about this Phoenician King

    Since I have very few Phoenician coins, I had to buy this at the ANA show last Thursday.:)

    Only two kings of Arwad are known during the Persian period: Maharbaal, who was king in 480 BC (Herodotus 8, 98) and Gerashtart, king at the end of the Persian period (Arrian 2, 20). About the reign of Gerashtart the only sources available are the coins which he issued and a few passages referring to him in ancient sources.

    AR Stater, Phoenicia, Arados, ca. 350 – 332 BC

    BMC 68; Rouvier 2; Betlyon 29, note 106; DCA 753; HGC 10, 36

    Ob.: Head of male (likely Ba'al-Arwad), laureate, facing r. hair and whiskers dotted, eye full, beard represented by lines of dots
    Rev.: Phoenician galley (pentekonter) r. over waves with Pataecus on prow, Phoenician letters Mem, Aleph und Nun above (resembling 7XY) year 15= 335 BC just before the conquest by Alexander the Great.
