    Hey Gang,

After years of being behind the table and seeing all sorts of rare and valuable coins I have found myself in a very strange place... I am collecting personally again. I haven't had an organized coin collection since the late 90's. When I got the coin shop I thought of the entire shop as my coin collection and when people asked me what was in my coin collection I told them "you are standing in it" as the shop was paid for partly with the proceeds from the sale of my personal collection.

Just this morning I realized that I still have a bit of collector left in me. I have had a couple of these coins for a while and just purchased the US cent this week. I couldn't bring myself to sell the first 2 and I personally purchased them from the shop this week.

So at the moment my collection of "Obverse Die Caps From Around The World" contains only 3 coins but I have never been more proud of my personal collection before. It has brought me back to where I started and really given me a new found love for these coins.

Nice ones! Looks like a challenging ,long term project. I guess once a collector , always a collector. By the way did you get a good deal on those two, and how did the negotiations go.:D

Glad to hear you're back Matt! :thumb:

That Canadian cent in the middle is awesome, that thing is deep. How often do you drink out of it? :goofer:

If the slabbed coin has a clear brockage of the obverse design on the reverse face, then it's the product of a single strike. Although these are uniformly slabbed as die caps, they are simply the mates to a double-struck reverse die cap. The top coin always curls toward the hammer die.

Mike, The Lincoln cent has no design on the reverse side at all. None of the 3 caps shown have any design on the reverse side.

If the wall and floor of the reverse face are featureless, then you're dealing with a uniface die cap. With respect to the slabbed Lincoln cent, there is no easy way to tell if it was struck more than once. A centered, broadstruck, uniface cent will also curl up toward the hammer die with the first strike. It's mate would also be a broadstruck, uniface cent, but the bottom coin would expand mainly in the horizontal plane. Again, you'd have a "cup-and-saucer" arrangement.

With its exceedingly high wall, the middle coin is certainly a die cap. I can't be sure about the coin on the right, but I suspect it's an anvil die cap (Canadian coins are struck with the anvil die functioning as the obverse die).

I'd say more than 50% of coins slabbed as "die caps" by the major grading services represent other kinds of errors.

If you got that 1998 Lincoln from the Penny Lady, I probably looked at it at FUN this year. She had some doozies!
