I recently acquired this penny in a lot I bought. It came encased in the airtight. At first, I thought it could have been accidentally struck on a steel planchet or plated, but it doesn't stick to a magnet. Thoughts?

probably one of those science experiment coins. pennies can be zinc plated using sodium hydroxide and zinc powder. 1960 wouldn't be a steel planchet. It is a possibility it could be on a silver dime planchet, but the coin would be much thinner than a normal penny.

99% of the time it's just those school science experiment coins.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4puQhfJg-o

    galvanization is zinc coating
    draino contains sodium hydroxide.
any combination of zinc and sodium hydroxide will do it
i have done it with bb gun bb's and fish tank test solution.
or liquid bluing and any other zinc you have.

Looks like a nice 1960 small cent to say the least.

Yeah. I cracked open the holder and checked the edge. The copper shows through. I think we have a science experiment victim. Cool looking either way.
