Malta is situated in the Mediterranean sea near the Sicily. This country has an area 320 sq.km., and population about 390000. During the reign of Paul I (1796-1801), Malta was a part of Russian Empire (because Paul I was the Great Magister of the Military Order of the Malta"s knight. Then French troops occupied the Malta. After the Napoleon"s defeat Malta become a part of the British Empire. Malta got own independence in 1964. It"s an democratic republic now.
Used to belong to Britannia.....Britannia rules the waves!.. You say they are old Matlese coins, here's a real one!
Ah, but not complicated either. That system, with the mils, was used between 1972 and 1983. Then, between mid-1983 and the end of 2007, they had the "normal" 1-100 system: 100 cents = 1 lira. (Interestingly, Cyprus had a very similar setup until 1983, with 1000 mils being 1 pound. They just left the cent out.) Malta did issue a few more "mils" coins shortly before the euro changeover, one denomination per year. But those were for collectors ... Christian
Why would it? In the very first post of this topic, "Siberian Man" mentioned that phase of Maltese history. Guess he just found it amusing that you would write that and, in the very same post, show a Spanish coin. Christian
Respected Mr. Nummus. I devoted my post for a coins of Republic of Malta. I know that Malta was a part of the British Empire during the 1814-1964 (I knew it in my school). But I did not devoted my post for a British coins. Well... Russian Emperor Paul I (1796-1801) was the Great Magister of the Order of the Malta"s knight. But I don"t show my RUSSIAN coins in this post...
