the BSA is a coin commemorating an organization with millions of currently active and former members. This organization has a close tie to numismatics. My guess this is a sure sell out.

Yea that's not a good trackrecord for modern commems.

It's a large organization and these coins have a large mintage. They'll be hot, like most well marketed Mint products are at the time they release and at the time they become unavailable from the Mint and as they become obtainable only on the secondary market. Just because people are Scouts doesn't mean they automatically all care about coins even if given one of these as a gift. This time next year it will the TPG high graded coins collectors want and are willing to pay more for and the vast majority having ended up in non-collectors hands will proliferate and suffer from mishandling, storing, get sold back to dealers, etc. In short, the BSA coin will take much the same route as the other modern commems have.

Indeed! I decided to part ways with modern Mint silver commems about three years ago and sold off all of mine. They were going nowhere and I began to tire of the relentless Mint campaigns to buy these coins, the declining quality of designs, trouble ordering from the Mint site on occassion, and the fact that so many were so cheap years after issue. At this time I will buy them only to flip them, as was successful with the LN6 Lincoln Chronicles set last year. There's just such a short period of time in which the value of these coins is worth paying the Mint premium for and for realizing any profit from resale in the short term.

For the third time over the last month, TeleTrade will attempt to sell the following lot of modern Silver commemorative coins:

Modern Complete $1 Silver Commem Set 1983P PCGS 69 Date Run (123 Items)

If you look back earlier in this thread you will see that this auction has been listed in two other TeleTrade auctions and each time is bid up to $6200 without being realized.

The lot will go live in auction again at 3pm today. Will the third time be the charm for TT to sell this unwanted run of high grade modern silver commems? The auction ends at 10pm. Stay tuned...

Again, I have NO affiliation with TeleTrade. I am personally curious about modern silver commems and have been tracking the failure/success of this lot.

Many of the problems and abuses associated with modern commem's were also reported back in the '30's, regarding a more classic (and accepted) run of commem's.....:)

Green-that's how I see it. These moderns will one day become our classic commems which I love now!! But even those have not moved in prices for awhile so the moderns have along haul imo.

On top of that the early silver commems commonly had quite low 'distribution' figures compared to today's high mintage runs. The quality of the strike also is a key difference in production terms from the early to the modern comemms. With so many high grade moderns the odds are stacked against them doing well in the short term.

Also interesting to note that bullion dealers, such as Apmex, sell modern comemms as bullion be they Proof or Unc, when they get hold of low grades or those they deem too banged up / not numismatically worthy.

It would be interesting to see the mintage of the old commems with the US population of that time vs modern commems with the Current US population.

As there are way more collectors now then then.

They're all in the Red Book. "Distribution" figures are given for the early commems and "mintages" for the moderns. Not sure it's possible to find exact population figures for the early commems unless you only tally those graded by the TPGs. You may be able to go by census records to help figure out the population at that time.

Current bid is up to $4900 less than 30 minutes after the lot opened today...

Doubt it will hit the $6200 again.

Well it has reached that bid point in the last two auctions and I doubt it will sell for anything less than $7k. Plus, I wonder if TT has their own bid in or a set reserve... it's currently still sitting at $4900 but bids usually pick up in the evening after people get online, check bids, etc. However, I doubt this lot will ever sell in it's current listing. If they keep trying to sell this lot unsuccessfully, then maybe they'll start adding the 2009 and 2010 silver commemorative coins in 69 grades and increase the reserve... :goofer:

Krispy...I gotta support danr on this one. A while back, when silver was $7/oz, I was getting a lot of very nice sterling flatware for melt! I also got many of the Franklin Mint silver sets for melt, as well.

One set I had a particularly difficult time getting (because it always sold for a hefty premium over melt) was the "Norman Rockwell 12 Boy Scout Laws" set. I finally got one, but ended up paying 2xMelt for it. That suggested to me that the Boy Scout collector crowd is alive and well!

I suspect the Boy Scout commemorative coins will hold their value, also...for the reasons danr gives. :thumb:
