I am responsible for imprisoning one of the few remaining 1909 S-VDB in the wild. This puppy has been a raw coin for over 100 years, but now rests securely in an ANACS slab. Some of you may have seen the post I made a while back about a 1909 S-VDB found in my granddad's collection that was returned fake. Well, this coin was found in a Dansco folder (not album/binder, FOLDER -- ARGH!). The dealer shipped it off and it came back authenticated. It is VF-20 with details (and I mean DETAILS!). The label says Weak VDB Corroded Cleaned But it's still the real thing. Enjoy the pics: Can you see the VDB? It is definitely weak. But it is much more obvious now in the slab than before. It first I thought they handed me the wrong coin, it is so much easier to see the VDB now. This pic is closer to the dark bronze color the coin has in hand.
Congrats! The vdb doesn't seem that weak to me, I can see it clearly in your pic. The corrosion seems light too.
Congrats on getting the coin. Did you say you got it for free or did you have to pay for the album. Just curious on how you got it. Btw, If you dont like all the details, I will gladly take it off your hands.
The Dansco folder was among the extensive collection that belonged to my grandfather and his dad. He didn't explain his collection to anyone in the family, so it has been an adventure finding what is there. He also assembled this in a small town before the internet, so I believe he did not always know what he had (hence the previous S-VDB that was fake). Sadly, they kept the premier parts of their collections in Dansco folders (not albums), so the backs of the coins are badly discolored. The early Dansco folders were actually red, and the backs of the silver coins have turned the color of East Texas mud. Ironically, his duplicates which were stored in plastic tubes are now the nicer coins.
Nice. Now you can look for the other coins you want. And maybe in the future you can revisit this one thinking "upgrade". Or not. It may be satisfactory for you. Whatever, you've got one. Congrats.
