Undergraded coins

Don’t blame you. I seldom like blast white coins. But I like that one. I know seated coinage too and there isn’t a touch of rub on the leg arm or head it’s an uncirculated coin. I’d regrAde if not in a old holder.

No picture, as it's currently tucked away safely in a highly secure location, but my favorite undergraded piece is a 1908-S Indian Head $10 graded XF-40 in an old green PCGS holder, prior to gradeflation. I suspect if I cracked it out, it would regrade AU-50 today, but I have no interest in doing so!

 

I believe this one would pick up a point in today's times but the grading fees would kill any reason to mess with it.

 

When posting coins that are under graded you MUST take into consideration the date of the grading. Anyone around for at least fifty years has seen astronomical changes to the grading standards. XF's are AU's; AU's are MS. Many coins in my teaching set mostly purchased and slabbed in the 1980'S are all under graded. Proof franklins are the worst! PR-64's are now 67's!!!!!!!!

There is no doubt that it has changed that much. Most of the good coins have been cracked out and regraded. But, there are plenty still that will upgrade.

 

I've always felt this one was undergraded....

 

Most of the time a coin that looks like a "gem" is graded lower than it looks is because of a patch of tiny hairlines. Mercury dimes are notorious for this, Blazing gems that look like 67's can be found in 64 slabs.

 

So an incorrect spot treatment?

 

They are not caused by spot removals. To tell the truth I don't know how these virtually invisible hairlines happen but many folks claim they are caused by the plastic slides in albums. I have been unable to duplicate then this way so who knows the truth.

 

I assure you there are no hairlines on this one. The luster isn't blazing, but good enough that it shouldn't lower the grade. There is a light anomaly in the right field that appears to me to be some kind of polished area that I've seen on many Walkers. XF45 looks right on to me.

 

This common date 1886 (with some sweet clashing) in a Rattler….. is shockingly clean to me. Zero chance this is MS63

 

Two points:

Back then there were only three grades of unc:
60: unc, but usually ugly or bag marked to death

63: Nice looking coin, but not a Gem.

65: Woah, I really like that one.


Also: The mark at Liberty's throat: is that a mark or possible clash mark, or?

 

It’s a nice clash. It also easily seen in front of her lips.
