Hi again, I found this 1966 Dime among my Dimes's collection. I think this coin can be a variety, but I'm not sure about it. So, your comments will be very appreciated and welcomed. Thanks in advance, Walter
Sorry, I could see no split serifs in your pics. With the doubling looking flat and shelf-like, my vote is for MD.
Just to try to show a little more clear and close... Note that the torch has a little bit of duplication, and the leaves too (IMHO).
Thanks. You can now clearly see that it's flat and shelflike, there is no widening, and there are no split serifs. Check here to learn the characteristics of true hub doubling https://www.doubleddie.com/58222.html
Thank you @Oldhoopster. I posted these new photos just to exemplify a little more clear what I'm seeing on the coin. I agree with your comments and understand that this really is MD and not Doubled Die.
If you ever want to check if you have some kind of variety, let it be doubled dies or rpm's, check variety vista and see if there is a match. There are two listings for a 1966 DDR and this isn't one of them. I agree with MD as stated.
@Wal888 Signs of MD also include the radial flow lines as on your last coin posted and this one also includes die polishing marks.
Roosevelt dimes are famous for die deteration and MD ...I cannot tell you how many times I picked up a dime like your specimen and believed I found something....but to be disappointed. Look at the mintages...those dies were pounded re lapped and pounded some more... the other thing they are famous for is the mis aligned dies...many post about that issue also.
Yesss!!! As said in X-Files "I want to believe" but "the true is out there!!" So, I apologize for all inconveniences I caused, but I learned to recognize a MD as MD and NOT as Doubled Die. Sincerely, I was thinking absolutelly wrong about it. I thought MD was only existent IF the doubled was like a shadow. If the doubled was more salient I thought that case was a "possible" DD case. Now I understand that the only way to be a DD case is if the doubled be in the same tall of the letter (or number), and NOT when doubled is lower than the letter. I'm not sure if I could made you understand what I want to say. Is very hard to explain in english my "portuguese thoughts".
"A doubled die happens during the pressing process when the die itself is created and not during the strike of the coin. The doubled secondary will be the same height and width of the design and will not look flat like." Just remember that there are many kinds of doubling but one one is the type you want. Look at a 1955 DD cent. You can easily see the difference between that and all other types of doubling.
@Wal888 One thing to keep in mind is the mintages..... an example the 1964 P & D Jefferson nickels had mintages that were unbelievable! They made a ton of them....finding 1 with full steps is next to impossible.....if you do you're in ....but when so many were produced it most probably machine doubling....or a coin that had die deteration. This is when the die was used so much...its on the last stages of its life. However it never hurts to ask questions, as that is how we learn. I totally understand the let down of believing that you found something...and it isn't. But that's what drives the collector to keep on searching. A very well known treasure hunter...who is no longer with us....Mel Fisher for years of searching for the Atocha as well ships of the 1715 fleet...had a saying...."today's the day" I had the opportunity to meet and shake his hand back in Key West Fl. in 1989. It was truely a pleasure meeting a person with such passion in his quest....even at the price of loosing his son and dauther in law durring his search....but his passion was the key! Passion in what we do in life is what keeps us going.... Keep searching...keep feeding the passion....thats whats going to make you a finder...thats whats going to make you better every day....in what you do. Never loose the passion....its what makes life great. BTW your English is a 1000 times better than my Spanish or French....as its been decades that I've needed to communicate in either of those languages. I have completly forgotten any Italian that I learned at a young age working in a bakery.... so no worries my friend we will find away to communicate....even if we need to draw pictures. lol...
Thank you @Paddy54. Your words really give me a new breath to continue to hunt. After all, if you find what you're looking for too easily, the thing loses its fun. Beauty is in the search and finding is just the consequence. You learn from the search, not from what you find.
