One more thing. It looks like there's a doubled varietie on the words OF and AMERICA. If you look in the 2nd picture in the first post, you can definitely see something on the F and in this pic you can see the end of the M and the right leg of the R pretty good.I tryed to take a closer picture,but...here you go. What do you think it is? Thanks B12

    1864 - damaged G-4.

    1863 - Possibly VG-8, certainly no higher. :(

Doubling? I don't know anything about that stuff. Errors are not my thing.

I can't see the DD but I would almost bet that its Longacre Doubling...no added value but something neat!

I agree with Speedy. What you are seeing is the remnants of Longacre Doubling, which is a feature of the die and not any type of minting error. As reference, here's a gold coin which exhibits the same feature:

And here's a IHC that shows the same thing (sorry for scratched holder):

There is generally no additional value to this feature, but it is neat...Mike

You are most welcome & thank you for the kind words. Here are a few more shots of it:

Even these photos don't do this coin justice, IMHO. I'm going to have to crack this one out to photograph it well. :)

    Take care...Mike

p.s. sorry for hijacking the thread.

Let me guess...a proof IHC...I have hunted one of them for about a year now but haven't seen one that comes up to the level I want...

Speedy, Bingo -- NGC PF 64 RB. It's taken me a while to find one I've liked. Had to go to the big boys (Pinnacle) to find it. I've seen quite a few nice ones, but they always seem to be $1,000 and over. I spent less than half that on the above coin...Mike

I thought so....my dealer said he has had them before and thought he could get one for alittle over $100 but from what I've seen on auctions...the ones that go cheap have problems...so it looks like I'm going to have to hold out on this and wait for a nice cheap one that finds me!
